Ola cabs is in the news, again for the wrong reason. Now a male passenger in Delhi has alleged that the driver of an Ola Cab threatened him with physical harm after he refused to give-in to the driver's demand that he compensate for the car's brakes that 'failed' when he hired it on Wednesday. This is the latest in a string of controversies involving app-based taxi services.
The passenger, Osama Salman, took to Facebook to narrate his harrowing experience on Wednesday afternoon.
Salman claims in the Facebook post that he called for a Mini taxi using the Ola app at New Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 after which he received a free upgrade to a Tata Sumo, driven by Pankaj Kumar.
"After 5 or so attempts to guide the driver, Pankaj Kumar, to where I was, I was forced to give up and walk a considerable distance to get to the car while carrying luggage with me," Salman wrote in his post.
"When the car neared Pragati Maidan (kilometres away from my drop off point) at around 2:11pm, I was almost about to get into an accident, but the driver controlled it and stopped by the side. He told me the brakes had failed," he adds.
Salman claims the taxi driver then demanded he pay a sum of Rs 227 for the damage and threatened him with physical harm if he failed to do so. Sensing danger, he decided to pay the driver.
Salman told the Hindustan Times, "I had to take an auto to reach my home. I called up Ola from home and asked them to connect me to their supervisor. They claimed that no one was available at that moment and promised a call back. But no one has called back and I had to share my ordeal on social media."
After Salman posted his complaint on Facebook, the official Olacabs account responded to him saying: "We really apologize for the inconvenience. Please allow us some time to get back to you with a resolution on it." After sections of the media reported on the incident Salman said he was contacted by Ola executives who assured him that the driver had been summoned to their Delhi office.
This is the second time this week that app-based taxi services have been in the news for the wrong reasons. Earlier this week, a woman alleged that the driver of a TaxiForSure (a subsidiary of Olacabs) cab she was travelling masturbated while driving the vehicle through the streets of the national capital.
