ZAMBIA; Mayukuyuku Bush Camp @ Kafue National Park

Pippa Turner

Kafue Camps & Safaris Ltd. was created in 2006 to meet the safari needs of visitors wishing for an excellent wildlife safari experience whilst also maintaining ethical principles. These ethical principles include both the employment of people from the surrounding areas of The Kafue National Park as well caring for the environment and wildlife in the Park.

We are a majority Zambian owned company, so revenue is ploughed back into the country. Our staff and directors have many years’ experience in the Kafue and in the wildlife safari business.

We aim to empower our employees to reach their full potential and train them to the best International standards, whilst retaining uniquely Zambian feel to your stay. We offer a friendly, professional service with a difference, which we hope you will always remember.

Welcome to Paradise….Kafue National Park

Mayukuyuku Bush Camp is located on the banks of the Kafue River in one of the most picturesque spots in the whole Park.

The Kafue is one of the world’s largest game sanctuaries, about the size of Wales.

It is well known for it’s extremely diverse variety of terrain, wildlife and birds, probably second only to Serengeti, and is still fairly unexplored to this day. Four of the Big Five are here, plus Cheetah, Wild Dog, and over 450 species of birds.

You are unlikely to see many other people or vehicles which gives a sensation of having a private safari. The animals are sometimes more elusive than in other more commercialized parks, but this makes your sightings all the more special.

Accessible Wilderness
The Camp is just 250 km from the capital city of Lusaka, an easy four hour drive. Our location means we can meet the needs of both international and local visitors whether they have transport or not. We are open and accessible twelve months of the year.

Mayukuyuku is the ideal place to break a journey if travelling Westwards to the Barotse Plains, Liuwa National Park, or to the famous Kuomboka Ceremony near Mongu. The Camp is only 8 kms off the main road that dissects the Park.

The Camp lies on the Southern edge of the Northern sector of the Park. It is ideally located to access both the North and South Kafue to such places as The Busanga or Nanzhila Plains.

The Camp
Mayukuyuku (meaning water hitting rocks) is situated between the lightly wooded tree line and the Kafue riverbank.

We are just downstream of a number of small rapids hence our name and we face a small island, so there are spectacular views in many directions, this often gives you good wildlife sightings when in the camp.

This small, intimate camp has just 4 luxury en-suite permanent tents under thatched roofs with their own verandahs and hammocks, each one overlooking the river.

Hot Tea or Coffee is delivered to your tent at your required wake-up time, to enjoy on your verandah.

Nearly all our structures have been built using natural materials collected from outside the park, this gives the camp a truly rustic, old style “safari feel”.

Our adjoining bathrooms are open to the stars, have hot showers and flushing toilets.

The main communal area has an open sided dining room with a small lounge and bar for an alfresco dining experience. It’s location affords fabulous views down the Kafue River in the daytime and often hippo or antelope can be seen grazing on the banks. In the evenings your three course meal is served in a cosy atmosphere with candles and lanterns. We only serve fresh produce prepared by our chefs with a big emphasis on fresh fruit and vegetables, and Zambian sourced meat and fish. We use Zambian products whenever possible and cater for all dietary requirements.

Packages
We recommend our “all inclusive” packages in the luxury tents which means we take care of everything for you including your transfers and it removes the need to carry very much money apart from a little for drinks, gifts and any tips you may wish to leave.

We also offer full board only, leaving you to organise your activities as you please – in advance or once in the camp. We can arrange transfers or if in your own vehicle, you can drive around the park in your own time. We can supply maps of local loops.

For those on a budget and who may not have of their own transport, we can assist with collection and drop-off from the nearest bus stop.

For those wishing to camp we have lightweight camping tents with mattresses for hire, if you don’t have your own.

Activities
Wildlife in Kafue National Park

Over 45 mammal species have been recorded in the Kafue so even regular safari goers can find wildlife that is new to them – Aadvark, Pangolin, Caracal to name but a few.

Sadly there are no longer any Black Rhino, but our Big Cat viewings are excellent.

Birdwatching is excellent here, we have rarities

such as the African Finfoot and Pels Fishing Owl.

Nocturnal wildlife are leopard, porcupines, genet mongoose, civet and jackals, to name a few.

We take time to show you both big and small mammals and often the tiny delights like butterflies and busy spiders and beetles.

We offer a wide selection of activities, these include:

Game Drives
Early morning and sundowner game drives in open vehicles. The sundowner drive turns into a night drive that reveals the nocturnals.

Walking safaris
Walking at a leisurely pace through the bush, with a guide and armed scout affords the opportunity to get closer to nature, we concentrate on both fauna, flora and spoor.

Boat Trips
A very relaxing experience in the beautiful surroundings of the blue green Kafue River, for viewing game coming to the river to drink, hippos and crocodiles bird watching and fishing.

Self Drive with a Guide
You can hire a wildlife guide who will accompany you in your own vehicle for a game drive, for the day, or longer trips if booked in advance

Fishing
If you have your own fishing gear, you can fish on the rivr’s edge or take the boat with a guide down the Kafue, or into the channels

The Campsite

For motoring visitors or backpackers, we have a lovely shady campsite on the opposite side of a small, dry riverbed with river or bush view from each pitch.

There are 6 pitches at present with nearby shared bathrooms open to the stars.

We supply firewood free of charge and there is a staff member to assist you.

For those without tents, we have lightweight tents for hire on request.

The campsite can take approximately 25 guests.

Meals can be booked at the main camp.

Community

We do, whenever possible, recruit staff from the surrounding villages which are just outside the Park.

We take in newly qualified hotel & catering students for “work experience” in the safari camp. They learn the differences to hotel work, so make informed decisions about their futures – whether to work in a town hotel, lodge or camp.

We ocassionally invite local children for one or two nights stay to introduce them into the world of wildlife, which many have never seen. Most of these projects take place during the green season.

In 2011 we started a small fundraising charity to assist the families of staff and villagers when unfortunate situations arise. Recently, with funding from a group of regular guests, this fund facilitated a wheelchair for a young, chronically sick teenager in the village.
