INDIA: Sabarimala Pilgrimmage Season 294 Special Trains Added

India’s Southern Railways will add 294 special trains to cope with an expected surge in passenger demand during the forthcoming Sabarimala pilgrimmage season.

The additional trains would be complemented by extra carriages on existing trains, with the overall aim of adding 3,700 berths on the southern railway network.

Additional ticket counters will also be opened at Ernakulam, Kottayam, Chengannur and Thiruvalla stations, and automatic ticket machine have been installed at 19 stations. The special trains will be run from major stations closer to the main Makaravilakku day, to assist the increased number of pilgrims.

The Sabarimala pilgrimmage is centred on the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala’s the Western Ghat mountain ranges.

In other railway news, first class and all AC class railway fares in India have increased 4.35%, effective 15 November.
