Dominican Republic: Aman at Playa Grande Will Be Called Amanera (NewOpening)

Northwest Europe is going through a heatwave this week (or as most other places would call it, “summer”), but Aman Resorts is with you if you’re thinking ahead to your winter break to the sun: Amanera, its resort in the Dominican Republic, will open towards the end of 2015.

Above the view that will greet you from one of only 25 casitas the resort will have, with this particular setting reserved for one of 13 that have their own 10-metre private swimming pools. Their “raw, organic design” is meant to complement the natural setting, and each has a flat, biodiverse roof with a garden to help cool the interiors and be eco-conscious at the same time.

This is Playa Grande beach, which the resort overlooks – located east of Puerto Plata and Cabarete on the island’s northern coast. The name Amanera is derived from the Sanskrit word for “peace” and “era”, the word for “water” in Taino, historically spoken by the indigenous people of the Caribbean.

We still need to wait for any interior photos, whether of the casitas or the public spaces of Casa Grande, which is – and we quote – “constructed in such a way that it appears to ‘float’ above a three-tiered water feature. Down at the beach there is Club de Playa beach club for informal dining, relaxing in a hammock under a palm tree, or getting out on the water.

Amanera will be the first golf resort for Aman, with the Playa Grande golf course (incidentally the course with the highest number of oceanside holes in the Western hemisphere) behind the resort. An Aman Clubhouse will be added with all-day restaurant, pro shop, fitness centre, tennis courts, and an Aman Spa with a range of treatment rooms.

We’re not quite at reservations stage yet, but it wouldn’t surprise us if a casita will start in the four-figure range. We’ll let you know when more details are available.
