The Penguin Colonies and Dolphins route is considered to be one of the main attractions for those who visit the Chiloé Archipelago and was ranked as one of the Top 50 Places to Explore in the World in 2016 by the prestigious travel magazine, “Travel & Leisure”.
This important attraction, recognized at an international level, combines entertaining sails between the innumerable islands and smaller islets, delicious marine gastronomy created by the local community and an exceptional marine biodiversity for those who love adventure and nature and who are eager to try new experiences.
An unmatchable natural site, where extensive Magellanic penguin colonies dominate, in front of Tranqui Island, is found via more than two hours sailing along the Queilen Canal to Islote Conejos (Rabbit Islet), located just 65 kilometers from Castro.
During the trip, you will be able to see native bird species, dolphins, sealions, black fardelas (a kind of bird), cormorants and the asustadiza marsopa espinosa (a kind of porpoise). In contrast to the dolphin, who is happy to welcome each sailing boat, this animal flees pretty quickly in the presence of humans.
Upon return to the port it’s possible to observe dolphins and sealions, amongst other species, and at lunch time passengers are invited to enjoy a series of delicious marine delicacies, a not-to-be-missed activity for anyone who visits this destination.
