KENYA: Passengers Spend Nights On Bad Road

Hundreds of passengers, most them traders, were left stranded on Saturday after heavy rains rendered the Maralal-Nyahururu road impassable.

The travellers were forced to sleep in buses.

The section between Suguta Marmar and Mugie Wildlife Conservancy was the most affected.

Mr Job Mwangi, a businessman who was travelling to Maralal Town said they feared attacks by wild animals from the conservancy.

“The place is near a Wildlife conservancy and the fear of being attacked by wild animals and thugs also left us scared throughout the night. I took roasted maize which was going for Sh100 to ease hunger,” said Mr Mwangi.

He added: “Some of the traders ferrying perishable goods to Maralal Town are already counting their losses after some started rotting.”

Another trader Mrs Evelyn Lesoipa urged the county and national governments to construct the road she that said was the key to the economy of the area.

“The road is used for supplying food from Nyahururu and therefore very important,” she said.

She noted that if the situation persists, Maralal Town, which highly depends on food supply from Nyahururu Town and other parts from the neighbouring Laikipia County, might be hit by a food shortage.
