THAILAND: Tour Bus Operator's License Revoked After Crash

Thailand's Department of Land Transport (DLT) has revoked the operating license of a tour company involved in a deadly bus crash a week ago in Chiang Mai.

Operations of Weeraphan Tour & Travel have been suspended and the driver involved has also had his license revoked while investigations continue.

Driver Somporn Bualuang, 58, has been accused of reckless driving causing death and injuries and remains in police custody.

The bus careered off a highway killing 14 passengers.

DLT director-general Sanit Promwong said the bus company violated transport safety rules by failing to ensure the driver kept to speed limits.

Several of the survivors also claimed faulty brakes were partly to blame.

Chiang Mai Governor Pavin Chamniprasart said the families of the 13 Malaysian tourists and one Thai tour guide killed will receive a payout of THB1.6 million from insurance.
