JAMAICA: Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett To Promote Wellness Tourism

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says that emphasis will be placed on the worldwide US$438 billion wellness tourism business to build out the product locally and attract new visitors.

“In the same way, the introduction of cannabis into treatment for diabetes among other illnesses will also play a role in diversifying the product that we market to tourists. It will be a focus of the ministry to build out the wellness tourism product in order to attract a new niche market,” Bartlett said.

He was giving the opening address to the University Diabetes Outreach Programme’s (UDOP) 22nd Annual International Diabetes Conference on Thursday in Montego Bay.

Bartlett said that the promotion of wellness tourism will touch every aspect of his five-pillar growth agenda.

“This growth agenda has been formulated to stimulate job creation and economic growth for Jamaica, while eliminating seasonality in tourism,” he noted in a release front the ministry.

According to the ministry, the global wellness tourism market is a US$438 billion business. Bartlett highlighted that the thrust into health and wellness will see new opportunities to penetrate the tourism market and “further development in our human capital”.

The conference, which was held under the theme, ‘Diabetes and the nervous system: Is there a role for cannabis compounds? explored the role of ganja in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes.

UDOP Chairman Professor Errol Morrison, who also heads the National Council on Science and Technology, said that this year’s focus on cannabinoids is timely, given heightened public discourse in recent times.
