Armenia: Visiting Armenia

The Archaeological Site of Zvartnots

Tourism in Armenia has been a key sector to the Armenian economy since the 1990s as half a million people visit the country every year, mostly ethnic Armenians from the Diaspora. The Armenian Ministry of Economy reports that most of the tourists come from the CIS, particularly Russia and Georgia, EU states, Iran and the US.

Although there is a shortage of resources, Armenia has been investing in new hotels to increase tourism. Outdoor activities and scenery seem to be the primary attractions. Lake Sevan, the world’s largest mountain lake, is a popular summer tourist spot. The Tsakhkadzor ski resort is open for skiing in the winter and hiking and picnicking the rest of the year. Mt. Ararat, the traditional site of the landing of Noah’s Ark, is located in Turkey. Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, also boasts opera, theaters and other cultural attractions.

Tourism has been growing gradually in Armenia since 2000. The Republic of Armenia Ministry of Economy declared that 575,281 tourists visited Armenia in 2009, 3% more than the estimated index for 2008, and 5% growth was predicted for 2010 as the world economy stabilizes. In 2011, Armenia is expecting to receive 800,000 tourists, which is 13% better than last year. Armenia attracts people with its sense of adventure and history. Many new hotels including a Hilton, InterContinental, and Kempinski are set to be built in the capital city, Yerevan as well.

Armenia has a reputation for greeting its visitors with warmth and hospitality. Nowhere is this truer than in Yerevan, one of the most ancient cities in the world, celebrating its 2796-th anniversary in October 12, 2014. The capital of Armenia has all the advantages of a modern capital city and boasts numerous historical attractions, together with a friendly atmosphere, which makes visitors feel at home. The city itself is one of the main tourist attractions in Armenia.

Yerevan is set among the Caucasus Mountains at an altitude of 900 to 1350 meters above sea level, on the river Hrazdan. The deep gorge formed by this river, with its picturesque slopes, has been transformed into a recreation area. The climate is dry and strictly continental. Because of its center, surrounded by hills, Yerevan is often likened to an ancient Roman amphitheater. From a strategically located balcony in Victory Park, on one of the hills (the Kanakerskoye plateau), you gain an impressive view of the whole city, with the astonishingly beautiful snow-capped Mt. Ararat as a backdrop. The sunlit "rosy" city is a picture that will impress itself on your memory. The city is pink from the 106 shades of the color of the lava stone, called tufa ubiquitously employed for buildings throughout Armenia. Large squares, broad avenues, old churches, busy markets, shady gardens, parks with attractive fountains, and cozy cafes are just a few of the amenities you will enjoy while visiting numerous historical and architectural sites.

Armenia has many places of interest, but the cultural center of the country is its capital. Most of the theaters, concert halls, museums and exhibitions are concentrated here. For those interested in history, particularly ancient history, Yerevan will be a blessed site with world class museums containing priceless collections. In the State History Museum of Armenia you will see ancient articles, discovered on the territory of present-day Armenia. You may also wish to visit famous Matenadaran - Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, a unique depository and research center with more than 16,000 precious documents in its collection. The famous citadel Erebuni, of both architectural and historical interest, has been partially restored and made into an open-air museum. There are 16 Armenian churches in Yerevan as well as a Russian Orthodox Church and the Blue Shiite Mosque. In 2001 Armenian people are celebrating the 1700th anniversary of adoption of Christianity in Armenia. A special program of festivities has been worked out.

Zvartnots International Airport
Zvartnots International Airport is located near Zvartnots, 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. The airport was built in 1971. Cherkezyan, and structural engineer M. Baghdasaryan. Later the project was implemented with modifications to the original design with participation of designers H. Tigranyan, Arthur Meschian. The airport was renovated in the 1980s with the development of a new terminal area, in order to meet domestic traffic demands within the Soviet Union.

To comply with the international air regulations, Armenia International Airports has improved security at Zvartnots. One hundred and fifty surveillance cameras have been installed at the airport, inside the buildings and in open spaces. Yerevan airport is guarded by Russian Federation and Armenian guards.

The modernization effort has included the implementation of a new flight information display system (FIDS) as well as a new automated and biometric-identification system for baggage check-in and passenger control. All buildings are equipped with free Wi-Fi Internet connection.

YEREVAN TO MARK ITS 2797th ANNIVERSARY OCTOBER 12
Armenia has a reputation for greeting its visitors with warmth and hospitality. Nowhere is this truer than in Yerevan, one of the most ancient cities in the world, celebrating its 2797-th anniversary in October 12, 2015. The capital of Armenia has all the advantages of a modern capital city and boasts numerous historical attractions, together with a friendly atmosphere, which makes visitors feel at home. The city itself is one of the main tourist attractions in Armenia.

AN ECONOMICAL VACATION
How much would you pay for a world-class concert or opera? In Yerevan you would have one of the best seats in the house for about $3-15 USD.
In principal, the same relative cost applies to just about everything in the country. To see the third-rich collection of painting of the former USSR you have to pay $2-3 USD. How about a respectable bottle of wine for $5-10 USD? The diversity of wine and brandy sorts is simply astonishing. There are round-the-clock markets at any block of Yerevan. All homemade products - meat, grapes, fruit, cheese, etc. - are 100% natural because of simple absence of steroids and chemical fertilisers in Armenia.
This country is ideal for many kinds of shopping and you can find good values in antique and new hand made carpets, jewelry, souvenirs in various forms and other objects of popular art and traditional craft Prices are commonly about 25% lower than in Western Europe.
Shopping for souvenirs is especially gripping at Vernissage- a weekend Arts and crafts fair where local painters, artists, artisans and hand crafts people display and sell their wares. Also, in the same park, there is a gold market that runs Monday to Friday. Expect the prices to be 1/3 of what you would pay at home for artisan's products from jewellery to carvings to modern and antique rugs and everything in between. You can find some truly remarkable and skilled work at the Vernissage, and, with a bit of luck, items of exceptional value and rarity.
Silver, semiprecious stones, mainly obsidians, hand-made souvenirs, carvings, jewellery, paper crafts, embroidered fabric and wooden products will be a particularly good bargain, not only at the Vernissage but also at the regular stores. As a broad indication the following can be mentioned as the main shopping areas:
Republic Square - Abovian street
Matenadaran - Mashtots avenue
Opera House - Tumanian street
Marshal Bagramian Avenue - Kassian street - Komitas street
A stay in Armenia can be arranged to cater for any budget level.

Bird Watching
Armenia is a mountainous country with elevations above sea level ranging from 379m to 4090m, and it combines elements of three geo-botanical regions: Caucasian, Iranian and Eastern Mediterranean. Various factors, such as the country's geographical situation and complex geomorphology, lead to there being a variety of landscapes and habitats from rocky semi-deserts and mountain steppes to mature mixed and deciduous forests and alpine meadows up to the snowline. Armenia also has numerous natural lakes (with Sevan being the largest in the entire Caucasus), rivers running down the mountain gorges, and a large system of artificial wetlands and reservoirs.

This, in turn, results in unusually rich diversity of flora and fauna in a relatively small country. Up to the present over 340 bird species have been recorded in Armenia, of which about 240 species breed here. Many of European bird species are represented in Armenia by particular subspecies, while almost all of the Caucasian specialities are habitually encountered during a spring-summer Birdwatching trip.

Some of these most sought-after birds are Caspian Snowcock, Caucasian Grouse, Armenian Gull, Radde's Accentor, Persian Wheatear and Semi-collared Flycatcher. Other interesting species for birdwatchers are Pygmy Cormorant, Marbled, Ferruginous and White-headed Ducks, White-tailed Plover, an excellent selection of raptors, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Bimaculated Lark, White-throated Robin, Finch's Wheatear, Menetries's, Upcher's and Green Warblers, Eastern and Western Rock Nuthatches, Wallcreeper, Grey-necked Bunting, Pale Rock Sparrow, Red-fronted Serin, Crimson-winged, Trumpeter and Mongolian Finches.

Situated on an important migration flyway Armenia offers superb opportunity to see, among many others, such species as Demoiselle Crane, Black-winged Pratincole, Broad-billed, Terek and Marsh Sandpipers, Greater Black-headed Gull, Calandra Lark, Moustached Warbler, and spectacular migration of eagles, harriers and buzzards.

The richness of birds in conjunction with the hospitality of the local people, numerous ancient historical and cultural monuments and some of the most impressive scenery in the Western Palaearctic, makes Armenia a worthwhile and rewarding destination for every birdwatcher.

Archeological Tours
Armenia is a real paradise for those interested in archaeology. There is no virtually a single place not occupied by any archaeological monument. It is a common situation when digging private house cellar - not to speak about major construction works for highways or factories - results in new exciting discoveries

The history of human settlement of Armenia dates back to Early Stone Age. Numerous cave settlements, rock carvings and impressive material unearthed indicate continued progress of first social entities at the territory of Armenian Plateau.

The Bronze Age was the period of formation of the Indo-European and early Armenian tribes, as well as of huge waves of nomads and migrating masses virtually from all directions. It is the times when Armenian tribe unions and confederations were neighbouring Hittite and Assyrian Kingdoms, when the megalithic observatory of Karahunj and the first complete cycle metallurgic factory of Metsamor were built. Rich findings of sites and tomb fields of Lake Sevan basin, Aragats Mount region and many others allows to restore the picture of life of what later became Nairi Kingdom.

Period of Urartu - Biblical Ararat Kingdom - was marked by the invention of iron, active construction of towns, fortresses, temples, as well as roads network. Arts and especially shrine crafts reached level of genuine masterpieces.

Hellenism in Armenia is demonstrated by unprecedented fusion of local and Greco-Roman elements practically in all spheres of life. It was the peak of might of Armenian Kingdom that expressed in establishment of new capitals, towns and development of fine and applied arts and crafts. Modern excavations provide an opportunity to affirm the notes on Armenia of such ancient authors, as Strabo, Pliny and many others.

Christianity adoption gave a mighty impetus and made Armenia recognized leader in such areas, as architecture, literature, natural sciences and arts.

This short description allows considering the range and volume of archaeological activities in Armenia.

Everyone interested in history and culture can find his or her own places of interest or just one inimitable corner long dreamed.

Below mentioned is the average or basic tour that can be tailored according to your choice and preferences, as well as the time of your trip. In addition to immediate participation to excavation process these tour also provide visits to numerous ancient sites, monasteries, museums and exhibitions.
