Sanyang village in the Kombo South District of the West Coast Region on Thursday held its 4th International Cultural Festival at the village square. The theme for this year’s festival is, “Utilising knowledge as enshrined in our diverse cultures for development”.
The annual event is designed to promote and revive the country’s rich cultural heritage.
Sheriff Bojang, the Chairman of the Village Development Committee, said the festival has over the years being a unifying force for the community and has increased social interaction amongst the different ethnic groups in the area.
The cultural festival, Bojang added, is part of efforts to sensitise the younger generation about the rich cultural heritage of the country.
The VDC chair affirmed that the cultural festival will also help the students especially those at the lower basic and secondary schools learn about their culture.
Bojang noted that cultural tourism is a viable tourism product of the Smiling Coast and that the success of Sanyang International Cultural Festival has witnessed a rapid rise in the number of cultural tourists that attend the festival each year.
“We thank you for believing in us and we also thank our corporate sponsors for their viable platform in promoting our goods and services,” he said.
He went on: “Our cultures will continue to meet the aspiration of our people to see brotherhood and solidarity among our diverse ethnic groupings. This transcends national and regional divergences based on mutual understanding and cooperation”.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Abdou Colley, the National Assembly member for Kombo South, expressed delight for witnessing yet another important cultural event, acknowledging that culture and tradition are an integral part of any nation’s development.
The 4th edition of Sanyang International Cultural Festival, he posited, is among the most prestigious cultural festivals in the country and that it will continue to promote human dignity, social justice and Gambia in generally.
He went on to thank the organising committee and the National Centre for Arts &Culture, The Gambia Tourism Board, Social Security & Housing Finance Corporation and all those who supported them in making the event a success.
The Deputy Governor of West Coast Region, Musa Amul Nyassi, acknowledged that the event depicts the community’s true love for culture, noting that the Kombo South settlement attached great importance to upholding social harmony and cultural pluralism.
He thus urged the youth of the community to take advantage of the unique opportunity available so as to revive the country’s rich cultural tradition.
Deputy Governor Nyassi on behalf of the Governor, affirmed his office’s support to the event at all times.
