Police in Voi have recovered 10 bags of bhang from a private car that was involved in an accident in Maungu area long the Nairobi - Mombasa Highway on Saturday.
The bhang with a street value of Sh 2.5 million shillings was recovered after police rushed to the accident scene to rescue victims only to find thousands of rolls of bhang stuffed in the boot and back seats of the Toyota Premio registration number KBP 465P. There were also some rolls in the dashboard, car seats and the spare tire of the vehicle. Police are pursuing the driver who fled the scene after sustaining injuries following the accident.
The mangled wreck was towed to the Voi police station. It took the police and members of the public over one hour to unpack the sacks of bhang from the vehicle.
Speaking to KNA, Voi OCPD Joshua Lutukai said investigations have been launched to find out who owns the car. He said that they had recovered an driving license and some court fine receipts from the vehicle that would lead the arrest of the driver. He however declined to give his name saying it would compromise investigations.
The OCPD said prior to the accident, the car was among those stopped by police on the highway, but it had tinted windows and they could not see inside.
Mercy Kavia, who helped off-load the bhang at the station, said the accident was an act of divine intervention in the fight against drugs in the Coast region.
“The accident was an act of God. He was angry that innocent lives were going to be ruined by drug peddlers. How else do you explain an accident involving a drug-carrying vehicle?” she asked.
