THE pre-colonial Sportsman’s Arms Hotel – strategically located in the leisure town of Nanyuki – is undergoing major renovation works to restore its lost glory, the management has announced.
Sportsman’s Arms, whose facilities are dilapidated following a series of management changes over the years, is seeking to restore its reputation as the best spot for the travellers to Nanyuki and Mount Kenya region.
The hotel’s general manager, Bedford Gitonga, said the management will renovate various facilities as well as expand it to revive business.
“One specific area we are critically looking into is our facilities. This hotel is old and most of its facilities and fittings are also aged. So, we are currently undergoing a massive renovation. From the rooms to entertainment and leisure facilities, all the way to landscaping,” he says.
The management is constructing a new 49-room block, which will increase the hotel’s capacity to 190 rooms.
“The location of this facility is very strategic. In prior years, this place was a favourite for the BATUK team and other travellers, many of whom were on picnic, doing mountain climbing and such. But times have changed. We are now positioning ourselves to offer the best in the corporate conferencing sector, and as a favourable spot for families.”
Batuk is the British Army Training Unit Kenya – a permanent training support unit based mainly in Nanyuki.
Sportsman’s Arms owns 17 acres but the hotel has used only 10 acres and plans are underway to construct an ultra-modern shopping mall on the unused land.
“We want this place to be a one-stop shop. There has been some lull and neglect in this place, but our aim is too see that Sportsman’s Arms Hotel returns to it’s deserved position. We are currently not rated, but with the strategies laid ahead, we will be up there with the best,” adds Gitonga.
The hotel comprises conference halls, cottages, suites and a penthouse.
