USA: Woman Killed In Washington State Ice Cave

Less than a week after four children were left without their mother when she was killed in a Washington state ice cave collapse, the kids were orphaned when their father was shot dead outside a California bar.

Adrian Martinez Cardona, 35, of Redlands, was shot dead just before 10 p.m. Sunday outside Lulu’s Hideout in San Bernardino, according to police. The slaying comes just days after Annalisa Santana, who shared children ages 14, 12, 8 and 1 with the man, was killed in the July 6 collapse of an ice formation near Verlot, Wash.

Adrian Martinez Cardona, 34, shared four children with Santana. The parents were both killed in less than a week in different incidents, leaving the kids orphaned.

Santana and her children arrived in Washington July 1 for a vacation and days later, went to visit the Big Four Ice Caves, beautiful formations made by avalanches.

Several hikers explored the insides of the caves, despite U.S. Forest Service warnings about the unstable formations, especially with a recent heat wave that has further destabilized the snow and ice.

A crack preceded chunks of ice pouring down, killing Santana and leaving her brother David Santana hospitalized, unresponsive and in critical condition with a head injury.

Santana’s oldest child, a 14-year-old girl, suffered a leg injury.

The Big Four Ice Caves in Washington have been even more unstable than usual during a heat wave in the Pacific Northwest.

The children’s father had been in near constant touch with the kids as they grieved for the mother, but had been unable to travel north to be with them. He was shot and killed Sunday night after he was kicked out of the bar following an argument, according to cops.

“He loved his kids,” said a friend.

Cardona got into an argument before he was shot dead outsdie Lulu's Hideout in San Bernardino, Calif., on Sunday night, authorities said.

Cardona had only been out of jail for a few days after spending more than three weeks in June and early July behind bars on a parole violation. He has previous convictions for domestic violence, violating probation, brandishing a weapon, driving under the influence, possession of an assault weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegally possessing ammunition.

The children are in the care of family members who have started GoFundMe pages for Cardona and Santana’s funerals.
