Car Collides With C-Train In Calgary's Northeast

Two people are in critical condition at the Foothills hospital after their car collided with a C-Train in northeast Calgary around 4:15 p.m. Saturday, EMS said in a release.

The collision happened on the LRT tracks which run alongside 36th Street N.E. just north of 12th Avenue/Marbank Drive.

A man and a woman — both middle-aged — had to be cut free from their seriously damaged car.

A witness says the crossing arms were down and the train was honking when the northbound car tried to turn left towards the McDonald's.

"Then I saw the train push the car the length of three cars. The car was stuck on the front of the train," John Sousa said.

"I saw one (of the occupants) put into the ambulance. I put my hand on my head and said, 'Oh God.'" he said.

Both occupants are in critical, life-threatening condition with internal injuries, an EMS spokesperson said.

No injuries to train passengers have been reported.

Shuttle buses were running between Rundle and Marlborough LRT stations.

A section of 36th Street N.E. was shut down in both directions, which affected traffic in all directions near the incident.

Police said late Saturday the investigation could take several hours.
