KENYA: Rhinos Spotted At Kitengela School

Two Rhinos said to have wandered from Nairobi National Park were spotted at Kitengela Boarding Primary School in Kajiado on Thursday.

Night guards saw them grazing near dormitories at about 4am and immediately alerted authorities.

Area chief Christopher Mutunkei and MCA Daniel Kanchori called Kenya Wildlife Service officers after they were informed.

"They slowly drove the animals back to the national park", the chief said.

A buffalo wandered out of the park on Tuesday night to an estate in Kitengela, causing anxiety.

It took the help of residents KWS officers to take it back to the park.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict in the area have been common. Kanchori said incidences of lions and other animals walking from the park to residential area are alarming.

“Our people have lost their livestock to wild cats and yet KWS does not act fast in compensating farmers,” he said.

In March, a stray lion spotted in Isinya town, Kajiado county, was shot dead after attacking and injuring a boda boda rider.

Mutunkei said the recent cases are because of the salt licks cites along River Orng’arua commonly known as River Athi.
