TANZANIA: Azam Mtoni Sea

The ongoing land reclamation by Azam Company for the construction of a tourist resort at Mtoni, north of the Stone Town, is safe to the environment.

Minister for Lands, Water, Energy and Environment Ms Salama Aboud Talib and the Zanzibar Environment Management Authority (ZEMA) Director Mr Sheha Mjaja said necessary precaution has been taken in readiness for the project.

"The multi-million project was approved after an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) was made. In addition, we are keeping an open eye during the construction work," Mr Mjaja said in response to recent environmental concerns over the project.

Mr Simai Mohamed Said (Tunguu) spoke positively on land reclamation project to boost tourism in the isles as several backbenchers expressed concern on environmental degradation.
