INDIA: Louvre Hotels Group Buys Into Sarovar Hotels, Becomes Largest Hotel Groups In India
Louvre Hotels Group, 2nd largest hotel group in Europe, announces its acquisition of a majority stake in Sarovar Hotels, the largest independent Indian hotel chain in terms of hotels and presence.
The European hotel group continues to rollout its international expansion plans with this, its first investment of size in the Indian subcontinent.
India, with its fast-growing economy, its global tourism potential and a significant under-penetration of branded hotel rooms, represents a new opportunity and a strategic market of more than 1.2 billion inhabitants for the group.
After launching a far-reaching scheme to strengthen its positions in China and South-East Asia, Louvre Hotels Group continues to boost its presence in South Asia, keeping up with the region’s constantly growing leisure and business tourism.
The group has decided to become a majority stakeholder in Sarovar Hotels, an Indian company made up of 75 hotels on the premium, mid-range and budget sectors, through 3 leading brands:
- Sarovar Premiere
- Sarovar Portico
- Hometel
In addition to the above three brands, the group also has two well established F&B brands, The Geoffrey’s Pub and the Oriental Blossom, and manages the lodging and catering facilities of various institutions in India. Furthermore, the group manages 10 hotels under the Radisson, Park Plaza and Park Inn brands.
Sarovar Hotels was founded in 1994 by Anil Madhok, a hotel industry expert on India, Singapore and Sri Lanka markets. It is also run by Ajay K. Bakaya and Mansoor Adil who have built it into a robust and effective hotel platform combining marketing, human resources, operations, management and technical services.
Leveraging its hotel expertise and seasoned management staff, Sarovar has developed significantly over the past 5 years, growing from 4500 to nearly 6000 rooms in over 50 cities. Sarovar has a secured pipeline of over 20 hotels, most of which are due to join the network shortly.
Over the last few years, Sarovar also started to develop its brands outside its boundaries, targeting Africa, and more significantly Eastern Africa, which de facto also strengthens Louvre Hotels Group positioning as the largest hotel group in this part of the world.
This strong and experienced team will continue to provide its expertise and manage the hotels under its brands. Both hotel groups share the desire to continue developing Sarovar Hotels brands.
This powerful platform will also sustain the development of Louvre Hotels Group brand which has been present in the Indian sub-continent since 2007 and currently manages 22 hotels under its Golden Tulip Umbrella brand.
This reconciliation between Louvre Hotels Group and Sarovar Hotels offers unprecedented synergies between strong local brands and the world’s 5th largest hotel group. Respective hotel owners for both groups will benefit immediately from such synergies including local and international management expertise, world-wide distribution, loyalty programs, sales and marketing initiatives, and procurement services.
This deal clearly demonstrates the ambition of Louvre Hotels Group; boosting its development through strategic deals on high potential markets.

Louvre Hotels Group, The 1st French Hotel Group To Accept Card Payments From 1.3 Billion Chinese
While the Chinese clientele represents a huge growth driver for the French hotel industry, Louvre Hotels Group, which belongs to the Chinese group Jin Jiang, announces an unprecedented partnership with UnionPay.
The hotel group has become the first operator in its sector to tap into a market of several billion cardholders.
Although Chinese tourists represent a growing market and demonstrate particular loyalty to France as a destination, the hotel industry has not always adapted its conditions to provide optimal service.
For example, the Chinese could not, up until now, pay for their stay with a UnionPay bank card in France. UnionPay is a network of Chinese bank cards, with 5.4 billion cards issued in 40 countries and regions.
“Chinese tourists love France, they love Paris, and remain especially loyal in today’s particular context which has impacted our attractiveness.
The least we can do is to provide real hospitality, not just lip service, and thank them by making their client experience easier. Today, they have to carry large amounts of cash, with all the incurrent risks.
Thanks to this partnership agreement with the UnionPay network, we will continue to grow by always serving their legitimate wants and needs”
Pierre-Frédéric Roulot, CEO of Louvre Hotels Group.
As of today, 23 hotels in the Ile-de-France region propose this payment solution. The terms of this agreement will apply to all subsidiaries in France by the end of 2017, followed by our franchised and managed hotels, in order to support tourists wherever their travels take them in France.
According to UnionPay, Chinese tourists charge an average of 5,400 euros on their card during a stay in France making it the 7th country worldwide–ahead of the United States and Singapore–and the number one European country, where Chinese tourists spend the most with a bank card.

CHINA; Chinese Want To Conquer Hotel Industry As Well
The Middle Kingdom is a mass market, in the truest sense of the word. With a market volume of 229 billion US dollars, China’s tourism is world champion by now. According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the worldwide leading provider of b2b hotel data, more than 700 new hotels with 205,800 rooms are currently in the pipeline in China. In addition, hotel chains such as Jin Jiang increase their investments abroad: After the Louvre Hotels Group acquisition also the stake in Europe's leading hotel group Accor has been increased now to more than six percent.
The world has to be prepared for more guests from China: last year 109 million travelled abroad, mostly to Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand - and to Europe. In the past four years the number of Chinese guests increased by almost one hundred percent on the Old Continent.
Due to their size, Chinese groups become more important – five Chinese hotel groups rank in the top 20 of the largest hotel groups worldwide. With more than 715,000 hotel rooms, Hilton Worldwide remains the largest one followed by Marriott International (714,000 rooms) and on the third place the InterContinental Hotels Group (approx. 710,000 rooms). After the hotel chains Wyndham, Choice and Accor, the Plateno Hotel Groups from Guangzhou in China ranks on the sixth place with about 442,000 rooms. Jin Jiang Hotels from Shanghai (352,000 rooms), which recently brought the European Louvre Hotels Group is on the ninth place.
Further Chinese hotel groups in the top 20 are Homes Inns & Hotels, China Lodging Group and GreenTree Inns. In total 32 Chinese hotel groups rank in the top 300 hotel groups. Even in terms of the world's largest hotel brands China is one step ahead: "7 Days Inn" by the Plateno Hotels Group is with approximately 380,000 rooms significantly ahead of the previously top-ranked hotel brand Best Western.
TOPHOTELPROJECTS collects and evaluates data about all hotel construction projects and hotel chains worldwide in an online database and provides its subscribers with a comprehensive overview of all major hotel projects, refurbishments and extensions worldwide.
