EGYPT: Cairo International Airport Installs X-ray Baggage Security Scanners

New x-ray baggage security scanners have been installed in the departure hall of Cairo International Airport, head of the airport Ahmed Geneina said on Tuesday.

According to Egyptian state-run news agency MENA, Geneina said that the x-rays have been installed in the area where loaders take luggage from the airport to the aircraft.

"Security checks using the new x-rays started immediately following their installation on Tuesday as an additional security measure," he added.

"There are three other security checks on passenger luggage in the airport besides the new measures."

The new security measures have been hailed by Russian and Dutch airport security experts who arrived on Tuesday at Cairo International Airport.

The new measures were put in place following the 31 October crash of a Russian plane in Sinai which killed all 224 people on board. The Islamist Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis militant group has claimed responsibility for downing the plane, leading to speculation over whether a bomb had been placed on the flight before takeoff.
