In this latest incident of poaching that occurred in wee hours of Sunday, the poachers killed a rhino and took away its horn.

The forest authorities recovered the carcass of the rhino during a search operation on Sunday morning, said a park official.

He said that late in the night on Saturday, there was heavy firing in Burhapahar range of Kaziranga.

“Though the forest guards launched an operation to nab the culprits, the poachers not only succeeded in killing the rhino but also in sawing its horn and escape from the site,” said the official.

From the place where the carcass of the rhino was found, the authorities, found atleast 20 empty cartridges of an automatic weapon, added the official.

It may be mentioned here that with this latest killing, 16 rhinos have been killed by the poachers in the current year.
