IRELAND: Force Of Star Wars Attraction Boosts Irish Tourism

Tourism Ireland is hoping for a boost from the legions of Star Wars fans prepared to travel from far, far away to Skellig Michael off the Kerry coast where key scenes were shot for the latest film.

The island has already received huge attention after being featured in The Force Awakens and will also appear in the next instalment of the sci-fi franchise.

Tourism officials are hoping to capitalise on that exposure by promoting the island as a tourist destination, with the help of a behind-the-scenes video featuring Star Wars director JJ Abrams.

Abrams and other crew members discuss why they chose Skellig Michael as a filming location in the short film created by Lucasfilm, which produced The Force Awakens.

The video will now be shared around the world.

“Tourism Ireland is taking every opportunity to capitalise on the publicity around the film, to help whet people’s appetites to come and visit,” Niall Gibbons, from the organisation, said.

Skellig Michael is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site and the decision to allow filming to take place there generated some controversy with concerns raised over potential damage.

However, a report found that filming on the island had “no adverse impact on seabirds, their habitats or other biodiversity”.
