SOUTH AFRICA: Chinese Arrested With 10 Rhino Horns At OR Tambo

A Chinese man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport while allegedly trying to leave the country with R1.5m worth of rhino horns, the Hawks said on Friday.

He allegedly had 10 rhino horns, 84 ornaments and 41 bangles made from rhino horns in his possession when he was caught on Thursday, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.

"The suspect, aged 48 years, was about to board a flight to Hong Kong when he was nabbed. The suspect claimed to have acquired the rhino horns from Maputo, Mozambique."

He would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of trafficking in rhino horns.

On the same day, a Tanzanian national was arrested with 10kg of ephedrine, valued at approximately R700 000.

The 46-year-old man had arrived on a flight from Abu Dhabi. Two packets of the drug were found when his bag was searched.

He would appear in the same court on Monday on drug dealing charges.
