Boeing 767-200ER, the Air Zimbabwe plane that spewed fire from its left engine shortly after take-off from OR Tambo International Airport on April 28, is the airline’s only working aircraft.
A statement released by the airline on March 7 claimed that, due to equipment constraints, the aircraft is used to service all routes.
The aircraft underwent an engine change on March 3, which resulted in rescheduled and cancelled flights at the time.
Destinations via the airline include Johannesburg, Victoria Falls, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and Harare, the Zimbabwean capital city.
Flight UM462 was en route to Harare shortly after 7pm on April 28 when it experienced a malfunction on one of its engines, which resulted in a brief tailpipe fire.
This malfunction did not threaten the continuation of the flight or the safety of the crew and passengers, the airline stated. The plane landed safely in Harare at 8.35pm, about one and a half hours after the ordeal started.
Our engineers have commenced the required investigation and a report will be issued in due course, the airline added.
