KENYA: Woman Found Alive Six Days After Huruma Building Collapsed

A woman has been found alive in the rubble six days after a building collapsed in Huruma, Nairobi.

Rescuers found the woman at 11.47 am Thursday. She is said to be weak with no visible injuries.

National Disaster Management Unit Incident Commander Pius Maasai said she is being attended to by doctors at the scene.

Kenya Defence Forces are clearing debris to be able to pull her out.

On Tuesday, a baby girl was rescued unscathed from the rubble, four days after the building collapsed.

Seven-month-old Dealeryn Saisi was found sleeping in a basin wrapped in a blanket.

On Wednesday, rescuers said there is hope of finding more survivors after nine rabbits were pulled alive from the debris.

The rescue of the woman brings the number of people pulled from the rubble since Friday to 137.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero reported via Facebook on Thursday that she has not been identified.

Kidero said she was placed on oxygen support and was being stabilised.

"The team of doctors looking after her, led by Nairobi Health executive Bernard Muia will ensure she is rushed to hospital for further medical checks," he said.

On May 3, rescue workers pulled out a one-year-old girl from the rubble more than 72 hours after it collapsed following heavy rain.

Kenya Red Cross Society said the baby girl who was found severely dehydrated was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Only seven of all the bodies have been identified. The exercise has been slowed down by the low turn-out of relatives.

More than 80 people are still missing following the collapse last Friday night after heavy rainfall.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing but teams complained of lack of sufficient materials and equipment.

Five suspects linked to the building appeared in court on Wednesday and were released on Sh1 million bond each.

Brothers Samuel Kamau and Henry Muiruri, Crispus Ndinyo, Justus Kathenge and Seline Ogallo were not charged.

There were celebrations at the Huruma collapsed building site Tuesday morning after rescuers rescued a baby girl alive from the rubbles four days after the incident happened.

The child aged about one and half years was found emaciated on the first floor of the building as the rescue team removed the rubbles and rushed her to hospital. The rescue happened Tuesday at about 4 am. Officials say the child is now being stabilised at the Kenyatta National Hospital and had run out of energy.

The death toll from the scene stands at 23 and so far 136 have been rescued. Rescuers say they intend to clear the rubbles Tuesday even as 117 are reported missing. Kenya Red Cross, which is among those in rescue mission tweeted: “Good news! A child aged about one and half years rescued alive at 0400 hours and referred to Kenyatta National Hospital.”

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said the teams at the scene were working hard to save more lives.

“It’s a miracle and good news to us with the rescue of the baby. The operation is ongoing,” he said. This came as police prepared to charge five people in court with manslaughter over the incident. The five include officials from National Construction Authority, City Hall’s inspectorate department, an engineer in charge of the area and the two brothers who own the house.

The house collapsed on Friday night trapping dozens of people. It has since emerged the house never had a plan nor was it approved by authorities. The hunt on more officials involved in the construction is ongoing.
