PAPUA NEW GUINEA: PNG Tourism Promotion Focusing On Tourists’ Length Of Stay


The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority’s (PNGTPA) is focusing on the time tourists stay in the country rather than just the number coming in, a tourism adviser says.

She said the longer they stayed in the country, the more money they spent.

Australia has been the largest tourism market for PNG, with more than 30,000 visitors annually. It is followed by Americans – 6600; Europe - 3200; UK - 4600; Japan - 1500; and other Asian countries 6400, with a strong growth of holiday makers and those involved in business.

There has been an increase of 14 per cent in the number of tourists visiting East New Britain, Wewak and Milne have had significant increases as well and, Mt Hagen an increase of 12 per cent.

TPA technical adviser Kayleen Allen said, East New Britain was one of the main destinations for its “uniqueness”.

She said the international market should be looked at as a long-term investment and building and maintaining relationships were crucial.

South Pacific communication specialist Talei Tora said a marketing workshop in the country on Sept 25 was timely.

That helped operators to understand the marketing concept of marketing their products and services attractively to the international agents.
