MONGOLIA: Crimes Against Tourists Decreased

Mongolia is considered as one of the safest countries in the world for travelers. However, in order to maintain this level of safety, the Ulaanbaatar City Council in conjunction with UB Tourism Board, Metropolitan Police and Mongolian Students Union launched "Tourist Guide-Police" program in 2014.

In 2014, 88 selected students from 21 universities were involved in patrolling popular touristic areas and assisting foreign tourists. In 2015, the number of tourist guide-police volunteers increased to 120.

According to the first lieutenant Saruultuya B. of the Metropolitan Police, there has been registered two criminal cases in 2014 and only one this year. Most of the problems tourists face are pickpocketing and getting lost.

The students receive 460,000 tugriks per month for their volunteering and the program organizers are studying the possibility to extend the program for winter months as well.
