As government ahighlights the subpar performances of several hotel properties on island, one of the largest hotel groups based in Antigua & Barbuda has embarked on a multimillion-dollar expansion plan.
Chairman of Elite Island Resorts Rob Barrett announced that work has begun in what will amount to a US $60,000,000 investment, over the next three years, into two existing properties and new projects.
The hotelier said, “I am going to spend about EC $100,000,000 at Verandah and I am going to be spending at least EC $60,000,000 in an area around St James’s Club, which we hope to develop.”
He said the new investment would add about 150 more hotel rooms to the country.
Barrett explained that the new rooms will create “separate resorts within a resort” which is a concept that is becoming more popular within the tourism market.
Barrett’s Elite Island Resorts includes the Galley Bay Resort and Spa, the St James’s Club & Villas, the Verandah Resort and Spa, The Club — Barbados, Palm Island Resort, St James’s Club Morgan Bay, Long Bay Beach Club, and Los Establos.
He added that the company has decided to make the investment because it has confidence in the country’s future.
“I believe in Antigua & Barbuda and I will continue to invest as long the Lord gives me air to breathe,” he said.
