Opposition spokesperson on tourism and cruise shipping Shahine Robinson is expressing concern at the state of preparedness of the island's key resort areas for the December 15 official start of the winter tourist season.
Robinson said: "The state of preparedness for the official start of the winter tourist season is of concern at this time. With the lacklustre levels of growth we have had in the sector in recent times, a lot is riding on how Jamaica fares this time around, specifically as it relates to arrivals and earnings.
“Industry experts and stakeholders in general know just how important it is to make an impression on visitors, particularly during the busiest period for the sector, by enhancing the look and feel of the product, as future vacation decisions are influenced by past personal experiences and the testimonials of others," she continued.
The Opposition spokesperson said there is no substitute in the globally competitive industry to taking action to prop up one's product and offerings. She said those actions go a far way in setting the stage for optimal levels of satisfaction and fulfilling experiences on the part of visitors.
“With so many destinations offering sun, sand and sea, it is imperative that Jamaica distinguishes itself in the marketplace by complementing the warmth of its people and its unique culture with world-class aesthetics," Robinson insisted.
The Opposition spokesperson said that with just about a month to go before the official start of the 2015/16 winter tourist season, she is “gravely concerned” that there are no discernible signs of beautification and other meaningful product enhancement activities being pursued by the Government.
“It is of critical importance that the Government makes adequate financial resources available, particularly to the major resort towns, so that some meaningful and discernible product enhancement activities can get under way ahead of the upcoming winter tourist season.,” Robinson said in a news release Sunday.
