ST.THOMAS: Discovering St.Thomas

Though it’s only 32 square miles in size, St. Thomas has a million miles worth of things to do. Go shopping and sailing, snorkeling and sightseeing, or diving and dining. Enjoy the island’s world-renowned golf course, picture-perfect beaches and spectacular nightlife. Take the Skyride 700 feet above the city or climb the famous 99 Steps of Charlotte Amalie for an incomparable view of the Caribbean. And if you’re interested in culture and history, don’t miss seeing the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, the 1680-built Fort Christian or the childhood home of Camille Pissarro, one of the best-known French Impressionists.

CULTURE & HISTORY

St. Thomas's history and culture alone are worth a visit to the island. Fort Christian, a U.S. National Landmark, is the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands and home to the Virgin Islands Museum, where early island memorabilia and old maps trace the islands' history. Market Square, a bustling produce marketplace, was once one of the West Indies' busiest 18th-century slave markets.

Also of interest is the Synagogue of Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the United States. On nearby Government Hill, looming over Charlotte Amalie, stands Blackbeard's Castle. Known during colonial times as Skytsborg, this 17th-century fortified tower also serves as a popular restaurant and hotel.

Located in the hills not far from the heart of Charlotte Amalie, Government House has been the center of government in St. Thomas since the mid-1860s. Visitors interested in seeing St. Thomas's political life may tour the building's first two floors. The 99 Steps, made by bricks that were once used as ballast on Danish and British ships, were built into the hillside to keep the orderly grid of the city intact.

HISTORIC PLACES OF WORSHIP

Cathedral Church of All Saints
Built in 1848 from stone quarried on the island, this church has thick, arched window frames lined with yellow brick that was used as ballast aboard ships. Merchants left the brick on the waterfront to make room aboard their boats for molasses, sugar, mahogany, and rum for the return voyage. The church was built in celebration of the end of slavery.
Address: 3 Domini Gade, Garden Street, St. Thomas.
Phone: 340-774-0217

Frederick Lutheran Church
Located steps away from Main Street, this church was the official church of the Danish West Indies. The building went up in 1793 and replaced two earlier buildings that were destroyed by fire. It has since been refurbished. 340-776-1315 / www.felc1666.org

Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cathedral
Completed in 1848, this stunning cathedral serves as the seat of the Territory’s Roman Catholic Diocese. Mural paintings on the ceiling and walls depict more than 12 major scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Presently undergoing restoration, the Cathedral is open daily for services and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Complimentary tours available by appointment. 340-774-0201 / www.catholicvi.com

St. Thomas Reformed Church
Established around 1660, this church has the oldest congregation in the Virgin Islands. Organized by Dutch traders as the St. Thomas Protestant Reformed Dutch Church, early services were held in Fort Christian. The first church was built in the mid-1670s and remained in use until at least 1731. In the 1740s a new church was built on Snegle Gade, which burned in 1804, two years before the replacement was again destroyed by a fire in 1806. Today, visitors can attend worship services on Sundays at 9:00 AM with Rev. Jeffrey Neevel.
Address: Located at the corner of Nye Gade & Crystal Gade (3 1/2 blocks in from the waterfront, in the historic district of Charlotte Amalie)
Phone: (340) 776-8255

St. Thomas Synagogue
As one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, this synagogue is an architectural and historical gem in the middle of the Caribbean. The sand-covered floors are a carryover of the congregation’s Sephardic tradition. Visitors of all faiths are welcome to experience the simple and stately interior of this National Historic Landmark. 340-774-4312 www.usvi.net/usvi/syngogue.html

Chrysler Cup Tennis Tournament
If you love tennis competition, this tournament is for you. Held over President’s Day Weekend, the tournament draws players from the Caribbean and the United States. Seven different classes are scheduled including Men’s and Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s over 55 doubles. First place winners receive a $1,500 prize purse. Contact the St. Thomas Yacht Club at www.styc.net for exact details.

International Optimist Regatta
Young sailors, ages 8-15, from around the globe descend on St. Thomas to participate in this annual tournament sponsored by the St. Thomas Yacht Club and the Virgin Islands Sailing Association. Green Fleet competitors stay closer to the shore while advanced Red, Blue and White fleets sail further offshore. Trophies are awarded for sportsmanship, top female sailor, and to the top five of each fleet and top three overall. The regatta is held annually in June. Additional information is available at www.styc.net.

International Rolex Regatta
Sailors from the Caribbean, United States and Europe block out the fourth weekend of March to participate in this race, the “Crown Jewel” of Caribbean racing. Professional race management, dependable trade winds and a challenging schedule of races add to the popularity of the regatta. Races include a distance race from the east end to Charlotte Amalie and back, and a race in and around the cays in Pillsbury Sound. Winners receive the much-coveted Rolex watch. Visit the regatta home page at www.rolexcupregatta.com for 2009 dates and information.

ST. THOMAS DIVING
Discover the incomparable beauty of marine life.
Diving in St. Thomas is easy and accessible, and offers an array of experiences for everyone. And because the U.S. Virgin Islands is a territory of the United States, you’ll enjoy the added safety of diving within U.S. waters. This means that all dive boats are inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and captains are USCG-certified.

More than 500 species of fish, 40 types of coral and hundreds of invertebrates inhabit the water. Vibrant blue tang, silvery horse-eye jacks, queen triggerfish, spiny Caribbean lobster, spotted eagle rays, Creole wrasses, and cleaner gobies are just a sampling of the marine life populating the underwater terrain. As the sun sets, octopuses, sea horses and moray eels make their appearance. Hawksbill, green, and leatherback turtles, call the USVI home and can be seen on many a dive. Lucky vacationers may even witness turtles hatching at one of the many turtle-nesting grounds.

Most dive operators teach a full range of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) courses from beginner scuba to instructor training. Specialty courses such as underwater photography, peak buoyancy, wreck, drift and boat diving are also available through many operators. Training for those with physical disabilities is available at several dive outlets.

St. Thomas is surrounded by some of the Caribbean’s healthiest reefs, and it offers more than a dozen shipwrecks. Here are a few of the local dive operators’ favorite sites:

Navy Barges
The twin barges originally housed men’s quarters during WWII. After the war, they were demolished and sunk, creating the ideal habitat for marine life. Trumpetfish, big angelfish, feather dusters and Christmas tree worms hang topside, while squirrelfish, bigeyes and channel clinging crabs hide out in the crawl spaces.

Wit Shoal II
Situated southwest of the St. Thomas airport, this former Navy tank-landing ship sunk in 1985. Now a thriving artificial reef, the ship is home to yellowtail snapper, barracuda and grouper which patrol its five decks. Brilliant orange cup coral and sea fans are among the amazing coral communities.

Cow & Calf
Located off the southeast coast of St. Thomas, the two largest rocks that break the surface are said to look like whales—a cow and her calf. Cow & Calf boasts dramatic ledges, wide canyons and large caves.

Tunnels of Thatch
The black rock arches and lava tubes are indicative of the volcanic origin of the islands. The tunnels are a part of Thatch Cay, an island northwest of St. Thomas. Bright cup corals and sponges are visible from the moment of entry. Divers wind their way through a series of tunnels, past big boulders and gorgonian patches actually swimming though the island. Butterflyfish, parrotfish and trumpetfish spend their days in the gorgonians, while tarpon pursue schools of silversides. Moray eels and spiny lobsters are regular residents of the reef.

Coki Beach
Adjacent to the popular Coral World Ocean Park, Coki Beach is home to two fringing reefs located 50 yards offshore and separated by a sandy flat. Beginner and advanced divers enter the pool-like conditions to find bar jacks, grunts, yellow headed jawfish and cleaner shrimp. An occasional stingray or turtle can be seen passing by.

St. Thomas Diving Facts
The average water temperature is around 82° F (29° C) in the summer and 80° F (26° C) in the winter. Most visitors are comfortable in shorty-style wetsuits year-round.
Visibility generally ranges from 60 to 100 feet, but it can occasionally be higher or lower depending on weather conditions.
A recompression chamber is available on St. Thomas in case of dive emergencies
