MALAWI: Police Boosts Tourism

Chiefs in Nkhotakota say a police unit which government built in the district has helped boost tourism in the area.

The chiefs say the police unit which was built last year has maximised security hence tourists feel safe to go to the district.

Nkhotakota’s location along lakeshore, historical features, and presence of game reserve are some of the features which attract tourists to the district.

Sani Area in the district is a key location in the area where tourists get accommodated because of availability of well-built lodges.

According to Chief Saidi, one of the chiefs in Sani area, in the past tourism activities in the area were disturbed due to loose security in the area.

Chief Saidi said people were robbed while sleeping at lodges in the district hence lowering tourism activities in the area.

“When tourists came here in the past they were harassed in terms of being robbed and injured, that was a shocking development to both villagers and lodge owners,” said Chief Saidi.

“I can give you an example that a certain white man was injured by robbers at Fish Eagle Bay in this area.”

Chiefs in the area thought it wise to ask authorities for the establishment of the police unit and the government did not hesitate but to provide a police unit in Sani area.

“The coming of this police unit has really changed things, since its establishment last year no any lodge has been robbed and this is giving people in this area an opportunity to be employed in these lodges,” said Saidi.

Sani Police Unit secures Sani and Chia areas in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district.

The police unit is also positively contributing to tourism in the area by providing tight security to well-known lodges in Nkhotakota district such as Nkhotakota Pottery and Lodge, Mlambe Beach and Lodge, Nkhotakota Safari Lodge, Chichi Lodge and Fish Eagle Bay.

Tourism is an industry that helps to boost the economy of a country hence providing tight security in all tourist centres is a must if the industry is to advance.
