NETHERLANDS: Stay Alert, Dutch Tourists In Turkey Warned

The Netherlands has issued a travel warning for Turkey amid a growing row between the two countries. Meanwhile, Ankara has summoned the Dutch envoy, claiming a Turkish minister and hundreds of demonstrators were subject to “bad treatment” by authorities.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry released the updated advisory on Monday, warning citizens to be careful when visiting Turkey.

“Since March 11, 2017 there have been diplomatic tensions between Turkey and The Netherlands. Stay alert across the whole of Turkey and avoid gatherings and crowded places,” the ministry said in its warning.

It went on to warn that there is a safety risk when traveling to Turkey, adding that Dutch citizens should register with the ministry ahead of travel.

The Turkish tourism sector is already suffering following last year’s attempted military coup and a number of terrorist attacks. Visits from Dutch citizens saw a 30 percent drop last year.

FlyBe airline has announced it will be expanding its seasonal summer service on its London City-Amsterdam route.

It is currently operating this route only on weekends, however, beginning March 27, the airline will begin service on weekdays with 7 weekly flights overall.

Flybe is the largest independent regional airline in Europe. It is based in Exeter, and operates more UK domestic flights than any other airline. Its hubs are located at Manchester Airport and Birmingham Airport.

In January 2017, the airline was rated as the best UK airline for punctuality and the sixth worldwide in the 2016 OAG Punctuality League report.

The Air Lease Corporation will provide two Airbus A330-900NEO’s on a long term lease to Air Mauritius with delivery dates set for September and October next year, when two ageing Airbus A340’s will be retired from the airline’s fleet.

The new widebody jets will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent 7000 engines and offer passengers a dual class cabin layout with 28 flatbed business class seats and 263 new generation economy class seats. The airline has opted not to include a premium economy class section at this stage as this value added option is gaining traction now among the world’s leading airlines.

Air Mauritius also has orders for the Airbus A350XWB pending with the first two of these state of the art aircraft due for delivery in 2019 but rescheduled the dates for two more from 2020 to a provisional 2023.

The airline is also embarking on retrofitting the existing long haul fleet of two Airbus A330-200 and six Airbus A340’s with new seats, a new entertainment system and notably WiFi on board.

Meanwhile will Amsterdam become a year round destination for Mauritius as KLM has announced a code shared flight, KL501, to operate every Monday, Thursday and Saturday, using a brand new Boeing B787-9 as of 30th of October this year. The aircraft will be offering a three class layout for passengers with 30 flatbed Business Class seats, 45 Comfort Economy seats and 219 standard Economy Class seats.

The summer schedule flights, as of 26th of March 2018, will be operated by Air Mauritius using an Airbus A340 on the route every Monday and Friday with a third service added for the months of August and October.

UNITED KINGDOM: Emirates To Fly Two-class Version Double-decker Plane To Birmingham

Emirates will start flying its new two-class Airbus A380 aircraft to Birmingham next year.

Commencing on 27 March 2016, the double-decker jet will be deployed on the EK39/40 service between Dubai and Birmingham. Replacing the Boeing 777 that currently operates this service, the high-capacity 615-seat A380 will add 188 more seats to the UK’s second largest city.

This will mark the first time Birmingham Airport has received an A380 flight.

“In 15 years of operating at Birmingham, Emirates has experienced exceptional levels of growth driven by an increase in demand from the Midlands,” said Laurie Berryman, Emirates’ vice president for the UK.

“The A380 is hugely popular amongst our passengers as it provides a unique level of service that has become synonymous with the Emirates brand. We are very excited to be the first airline to introduce the iconic A380 into the region and look forward to more of our customers enjoying the experience of flying on the world’s largest passenger aircraft.”

Emirates launched the two-class version of its A380 earlier this year. Configured with 58 seats in business class and 557 in economy, this is the highest capacity commercial aircraft operating anywhere in the world today, with almost 150 more seats than BA’s A380.

The upgrade will increase Emirates’ daily capacity to and from Birmingham by 15%, and means that the airline will now offer a total of 77 A380 flights into the UK each week – more than any other country on the Emirates network.

“This is really great news for the airport and our community,” said Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport. “The A380 will not only give an additional 188 seats a day from Birmingham but will also offer customers that want to experience the magnificent A380 aircraft an opportunity to now do so from the Midlands region and I’m certain that the service, just like the programme spanning 15 years from Birmingham Airport, will be hugely successful.”

CHINA: Beijing Capital Airlines targets UK, Australia

Beijing Capital Airlines, the Chinese airline that recently entered the long-haul market, is planning to launch its first flights to the UK and Australia.

According to a statement on the website of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the airline has applied for the permission to launch scheduled services to Birmingham and Melbourne next year.

If approved, the Birmingham service will commence in April 2016, operating twice a week – once from Beijing and once from Hangzhou. The Melbourne route meanwhile, would operate three times a week direct from Qingdao, a port city in Shandong province. All three routes are new city pairs.

Beijing Capital Airlines plans to deploy its 222-seat Airbus A330 aircraft on the routes, configured with 36 seats in business class and 186 in economy.

Previously a domestic and short-haul airline, Beijing Capital launched its first ever long-haul services to Copenhagen in September 2015, connecting the Danish capital with Beijing and Hangzhou. It is also planning to fly to Madrid in December.

The carrier, which is owned by the HNA Group, will take delivery of over 30 new twin-aisle aircraft by end of 2020.

UNITED KINGDOM: Birmingham Is UK’s Top Destination

Cvent, a global event management company, listed Birmingham 22nd in its second annual ranking of more than 2,500 EMEA cities, based on event booking activity through the firm’s supplier network. Activity was tracked from 1st January to 31st December 2015, with criteria including how often a destination is searched for by Cvent clients and the total number of room nights generated by events.

Birmingham moved up one place to 22nd in Cvent’s top 25 rankings, overtaking its nearest UK rival Manchester (23rd). The top five comprised London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin.

Emma Gray, director of Marketing and Communications at Meet Birmingham, the city’s business tourism programme, commented:“Birmingham’s position as the preferred UK meetings destination outside London is further evidence of the consistent hard work of our venues and partners to provide the best possible experience for our many event visitors.

“It is also testament to the continued, significant investment being made to enhance Birmingham’s business tourism sector. Events play a vital role in the city’s visitor economy, which hit an all-time high of £6.2 billion in 2015. By launching new spaces including the Vox Conference Centre and accommodation providers such as Park Regis – together with redeveloped transport hubs New Street station and Birmingham Airport – we’re ensuring we remain attractive to this valuable market.”

Cvent monitors approximately 230,000 hotels, resorts and event venues in 175 countries worldwide through its Supplier Network database. The company has 16,000 customers and 2,000 employees across the globe.

The news comes as it revealed that Birmingham welcomed more than one million international visitors for the first time in 2015, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The 163,000 increase (17.3%) in foreign guests was the largest for any city outside London.

Couple Book The Wrong Airport In A Plan For A Dream Holiday to Las Vegas

Richella Heekin spent $2500 on the Las Vegas birthday surprise for boyfriend Ben Marlow.
A couple booked a trip of a lifetime to Las Vegas, only to discover at the check-in counter they had selected the wrong airport.

The couple showed up at Birmingham Airport in England and couldn't see their flight on the departure board.

They quickly realised their tickets were for Birmingham, Alabama in the US.

Richella Heekin had been saving for two years to pay for the surprise £1200 ($2500) holiday for boyfriend Ben Marlow's 30th birthday.

Richella's face has just gone red and she's in tears.

"I was like - we're not going to Vegas then. I was more gutted for Richella than myself because it was a surprise."

Heekin said the error occurred after "doing a lot of clicking" on booking site lastminute.com.

She did not realise the BHM code on her ticket was referring to Alabama's airport. BHX is the airport code for the English city.

The couple used a credit card to purchase two last-minute flights to Amsterdam in the Netherlands instead.

But since the pair attracted worldwide media attention for their blunder, Virgin Holidays has stepped in to provide the couple with free flights and a five-night stay in Vegas.

Airport mix-ups are not uncommon.

Last year Ghanaian man Emmanuel Akomanyi was attempting to travel to Guyana on South America's Caribbean coast, but when he got off at the other end he was in the Brazilian city of Goiania - almost 3000km away from where he needed to go.

In 2014, US dentist Edward Gamson sued British Airways after he booked first-class tickets to Granada in Spain, but ended up in Grenada, the Caribbean island.

- A woman who wanted to travel to Dakar, Senegal, ended up in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

- An 85-year-old woman ended up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after she booked a Southwest Airlines flight to Fort Myers, Florida because of an airline error.

- A VietJet airplane that took off from Hanoi landed at Da Lat airport, 140km away from Cam Ranh Airport, where it was supposed to be.

- A Southwest Airlines plane landed at a small airport in Taney County, Missouri, approximately 12km from where it was meant to land at Branson Airport. Taney County had a much shorter runway and the plane had to brake hard to stop before the end.

- A 21-year-old American student found himself on a plane to Auckland, when he just wanted to get to Oakland, California. He blamed it on the Kiwi accent: ""They didn't say Auckland. They said Oakland. They talk different."
