International hotelier Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to open a 261-room hotel in Kuwait City in 2020.

Affiliate Grand Hyatt Hotel will develop its fifth establishment in the Gulf Corporation council at Kuwait’s 360 Mall, which is undergoing a KWD 100m (Dhs 1.21bn) expansion.

The massive investment by owners the Tamdeen Group will see the mall transformed into a 122,000 square metre-complex. It will combine retail, hospitality, entertainment and sport, with the building of the Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah Al Jaber Al Sabah International Tennis Complex.

The first stage of the expansion will be completed by 2019.

Speaking to Gulf Business, Tamdeen Group chair Mohammed Jassim Khalid Al Marzouq said falling oil prices had given Kuwait more opportunities to diversify its economy.

He said: “Before because of the oil prices, the government was not considering any deviation or changing the way things are running. Now I think with such pressure is a positive thing because it is helping the government to re-think and open doors to the private sector.

“The government has the biggest role in our economy; we think this is wrong. For the government to give the private sector a better role and more involvement – through the pressure of oil prices we could get that.”

He added: "Grand Hyatt Kuwait, our first project with Hyatt, will bring the hospitality aspect of the 360 MALL to life as part of the expansion of the prestigious international tennis complex launched earlier this month. Given Hyatt’s strong brand name and the new hotel’s excellent location, we believe that Grand Hyatt Kuwait will attract both business and leisure travelers from across the region.”

Grand Hyatt Kuwait will be designed by RTKL Architects, which also designed the existing 360 Mall.

Earlier this week, Gulf Business revealed that American luxury chain Bloomingdale’s was in talks to open a store at the expanded mall.
