There could be improved air connectivity between Los Angeles and three Mexican destinations if United States authorities approve an application by Southwest Airlines.
The company has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for twice-daily flights to Cancún and San José del Cabo and a daily flight to Puerto Vallarta.
Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said the airline is optimistic that it will gain approval before the end of this month.
It currently flies between eight U.S. cities and four in Mexico.
A consultancy retained by Southwest Airlines projected that new competition on the three routes could result in fares 20% below what they currently average, increase total traffic by more than half a million passengers a year and save those passengers US $50 million annually.
