MOROCCO: Air Arabia Maroc Starts Flights To Agadir

Air Arabia Maroc has announced it will launch flights from Manchester to Agadir this winter.

The Moroccan low cost airline will start twice weekly flights from October to the resort.

It makes Manchester the only airport in the UK outside of London served by the carrier.

Adel Al Ali, group chief executive, Air Arabia, said: “We look forward to connecting Manchester with Agadir and we are confident that this step will further cater to the needs of our growing customer base.

“Agadir offers a great tourism experience year around with its unique beaches, mountains, golf resorts and excellent dining options.”

The new service will operate on Thursdays and Sunday on an Airbus A320.

Stephen Turner, commercial director for Manchester Airport, said: “It’s great news that Air Arabia Maroc will start flights to Agadir from Manchester this winter.

“Agadir is a great beach resort that also offers fantastic access to the Atlas Mountains.

“This route will provide the 22 million people in our catchment area with further choice on how to reach this exciting destination.”

Royal Air Maroc has announced the launch of a new route between Manchester and Casablanca.

From Tuesday March 28th, the Moroccan flag-carrier will begin operating direct non-stop flights three times per week from Manchester Airport to Mohammed V International Airport.

The service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

This exciting launch sees Manchester Airport become only the third UK airport to operate flights to Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, with the airline also currently running services from London Gatwick and London Heathrow.

The new service will use Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with both business and economy class seating available.

The scheduled flight time is approximately three hours and twenty minutes.

As well as offering direct flights from Manchester to Casablanca, Royal Air Maroc’s new service opens the door for connections to 33 African destinations.

Key connections through Casablanca, the second-largest hub to Africa, include Lagos, Accra, Nairobi and Banjul.

There is also an opportunity for flight connections to Brazil, as well as daily connecting flights to popular tourist destinations such as Marrakech and Agadir.

Royal Air Maroc serves over 90 destinations in four continents, bringing Africa closer to the rest of the world.

The airline’s UK & Ireland general manager, Achraf El Hassani, said: “Royal Air Maroc is delighted to launch the only non-stop service from the North of England direct to Casablanca, with thrice-weekly flights between Manchester Airport and Mohammed V International Airport.

“We are thrilled to be providing yet another invaluable link from the UK to Africa and look forward to welcoming passengers on board our service from March 28th.”

Manchester Airport is the UK’s third largest with more than 25.6m annual passengers.

It has more than 210 routes served by 70 plus airlines.

On the announcement of the Royal Air Maroc service, Stephen Turner, commercial director at Manchester Airport, said: “We are pleased to see Royal Air Maroc launch services from Manchester Airport.”

ITALY: Naples Airport Seeing International Growth

Naples Airport doesn’t seem to go in for route launch celebrations, but that hasn’t stopped a number of airlines launching new routes to the Italian airport this summer including Air Arabia Maroc (from Casablanca) and Finnair (from Helsinki). This has helped passenger numbers grow by over 5% in the first 8 months of 2015.

Naples Airport, located in the town of Capodichino, around six kilometres north of downtown Naples, is Italy’s eighth busiest airport. In the first eight months of this year passenger numbers are up 5.3% indicating that the airport is likely to pass the six million passenger milestone for the first time in 2015. Traffic growth is being driven by international services where passenger numbers are up 10.5%, while domestic traffic has declined by 2%. Between 1996 and 2007 passenger numbers more than doubled at the airport, but since then the annual passenger throughput has hovered between five and six million passengers.

The airport’s seasonality profile has been stable in recent years, and scores a “good” 8.97 on anna.aero’s Seasonal Variation in Demand (SVID) calculator. Last year’s almost 10% boost in traffic can be attributed in large part to the decision by easyJet to make the airport a designated base at the start of the summer season. This saw the UK-based LCC add five new destinations (Brussels, Catania, Corfu, Malta and Mykonos) to its existing network, which has been followed up this summer by a further three new routes, with flights from London Luton having been launched at the start of the W14/15 season.

Milan and London are leading destinations

According to ENAC data, of the airport’s almost six million passengers in 2014, almost 1.1 million flew to and from Milan, with Linate flights carrying around 43% more passengers than Malpensa flights. London was the leading international destination, with London Gatwick the leading international route. Among the top 12 routes six are domestic and six are international (shown in bright green). In 2014, international destinations accounted for 57% of the airport’s traffic, with this segment of the market showing an impressive 18.4% growth. Domestic traffic by contrast fell by 0.5%.

The vast majority of services are to destinations in Europe with Casablanca (started earlier this year by Air Arabia Maroc) and New York being notable exceptions. Other new services launched during 2015 were to Athens (with easyJet), Helsinki (Finnair), Heraklion (Volotea), Leeds Bradford (Monarch), Moscow Domodedovo (S7 Airlines), Olbia (easyJet), Sofia (Wizz Air), Split (easyJet), Tel Aviv (El Al) and Zurich (SWISS).

New services announced so far for the rest of this year and 2016 include easyJet starting flights to Lyon in mid-December, while Jet2.com will operate flights to the airport for the first time next summer with the introduction of seasonal flights to Edinburgh and Manchester.
34 airlines in Naples but where’s Ryanair?

easyJet is now well established as the biggest airline at the airport, accounting for around 27% of flights and seats during the peak summer period. According to OAG Schedules Analyser a total of 34 airlines operated scheduled services at the airport this summer. Apart from the top 12 in the following graph, other notable airlines offering flights at the airport include Aer Lingus, Austrian Airlines, Blue Air, Brussels Airlines, SAS, Transavia and Turkish Airlines. A significant absentee given its major presence elsewhere in Italy is Ryanair.

MOROCCO: Casablanca Airport To Break 8m For The First Time In 2015

On 26 July last year, Royal Air Maroc started a new route from Casablanca to Montpellier in France. Unsurprisingly, the Moroccan flag carrier is largest airline at the nation’s biggest airport, commanding two in every three seats.

Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport is Morocco’s largest airport, serving the largest city (the political capital is Rabat) located in west of the country on the Atlantic Ocean coast. Looking at OAG Schedules Analyser data for week commencing 6 April, the airport has a network of 97 destinations served by 23 airlines. These destinations are spread across Africa (47), Europe (41), Middle East (6), North America (2) and South America (1).

The airport is nearly twice as big as the number two airport – Marrakech, which handled just over four million passengers in 2014. Indeed, at a combined annual traffic of 8.99m passengers in 2014, the eight next biggest airports in Morocco are only just able to mass together enough throughput to beat the eight million annual passengers using Casablanca. Although too early to dictate a trend for 2015, the airport’s traffic was down 1.4% in January and 0.2% in February, against a national average (the biggest eight airports again) of a marginal 1.1% growth.
SVID says ‘Good’ for Casablanca

Entering Casablanca’s monthly passenger data for 2014 into anna.aero’s Seasonal Variation in Demand (SVID) calculator, the airport performs well, generating a score of 2.46 ‒ a ‘good’ rating. The airport’s seasonality performance has improved marginally when compared to the result achieved in 2013, when it attained a score of 2.54, however both years are down on the 2012 result of 1.60 – which was an ‘excellent’ score. That said, in that year, the airport was almost one million annual passengers smaller (7.19 million) than it was at the end of 2014.

Evaluating Casablanca alongside the most significant competing Moroccan airports, our data elves also ran SVID calculations on Marrakech (1.63 – ‘excellent’) and Agadir, which also generated an ‘excellent’ result (1.31). While Casablanca’s busiest month is August and its lowest is February, and Agadir is not dissimilar (August and December), Marrakech has very different traffic profile, with April being its busiest month and July was its quietest in 2014. The seasonal lows for the three airports represent 58% (CMN), 67% (RAK) and 67% (AGA) of their respective seasonal highs.

Paris links are paramount
When comparing total seats being offered across all 97 city pairs in the week commencing 6 April to the same seven days in April 2014, there is a 6.1% increase year-on-year. The top two airports have gone unchanged, however with a 1.4% reduction since last April, Paris Orly’s dominance over the other airport across town has been reduced, a position also compounded by Paris CDG’s 17% annual increase. The biggest growth has been reserved for Dubai however, on which Emirates has added 75% more seats in April 2015. The top 12 offers just two domestic routes (highlighted in bright green) to Agadir and Marrakech.

The airport’s top 12 routes have marginally increased their share of total weekly seat capacity since last April, rising from 41.4% to 42.3%. Rome Fiumicino has fallen out of the top dozen airports ranking, replaced by Dakar. Over the last 12 months, Casablanca has gained a net of three new non-stop routes, having added eight destinations (Lagos, Accra, N’Djamena, Beni Mellal, Naples, Abuja, Errachidia and Zagora), but with five airport pairs being terminated (Turin, Benghazi, Tetouan, Paris Beauvais and Tan Tan).

RAM ramps up weekly capacity
While far from being a dominant position, the top 12 offers five European airlines (highlighted in bright green), with the remaining airlines being made up from Morocco (two), Middle East (three) and Africa (two). Royal Air Maroc currently controls 65% of weekly seats in Casablanca, a figure that has gone unchanged in the last 12 months, despite it increasing by 7%. While Iberia and Tunisair are new to the top 12 in April 2015, this is to the detriment of Alitalia and Etihad Airways, both of which have been ousted. These airlines have not posted the biggest annual growth however, as this was again achieved by Emirates (+75%), seeing the MEB3 carrier jump from sixth to third in the past 12 months. Air France has reduced its capacity by the most, dropping its weekly seats by 778, or 19%, just beating easyJet, which was down by 18% year-on-year. Conspicuous by its absence at Casablanca is Ryanair, which flies to plenty of other Moroccan airports ‒ Rabat, Nador, Essaouira, Oujda, Fez, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier. Clearly the gates to Casablanca have remained firmly bolted against the Irish ULCC’s entry.

Over the last 12 months, the airport has not lost any serving carriers. That said, it has not added any either, as the same 23 airlines continue to operate from Casablanca. However, this number will be expanded by at least one during 2015, as transavia.com France plans to start operations from Paris Orly in July, according to anna.aero’s New Route Database. In addition to this new route, Air Arabia Maroc plans to launch services to Naples, with Royal Air Maroc to start operations to Abuja, both on 29 March. The Moroccan flag carrier also intends to commence thrice-weekly flights to Beijing in June.
