Mbandaka, formerly known as Coquilhatville or Coquilhatstad - named after Camille-Aime Coquilhat, is a city on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, lying near the confluence of the Congo and Ruki Rivers.
It is the capital of Equateur province.
On 16 May 2018, a case of Ebola occurred in the city, spreading from an outbreak in the countryside.
Mbandaka lies on the east side of the Congo River below the mouth of the Tshuapa River, a tributary of the Congo.
It is south of the Ngiri Reserve on the opposite bank of the Congo, a large area of swamp forest, and is at the center of the Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe Ramsar wetland.
Mbandaka is the capital of the Equateur province, and located only a few miles from the equator.
It is home to Mbandaka airport and is linked by riverboat to Kinshasa and Boende. The city's population is approximately 729,257 (2004).
Congo Basin is a region in Democratic Republic of the Congo and is made up by the provinces of Equateur, Oriental and Maniema.

The Congo Basin region composes the majority of the world's second largest jungle after the Amazon.
Because of this, and despite its size, the region is difficult to get around by land, with pirogues and other boats and aircraft the only ways to easily get around.
Most of the region's inhabitants still live in small villages in the jungle, although many have moved to cities like Kisangani, Kindu, Bumba, & Mbandaka.
Mbandaka is largely populated by people of the Mongo ethnic group, although people from many different regions live in the city.
The main languages spoken in Mbandaka are Lingala, French, and Mongo.
Years of war and neglect have taken a heavy toll on the city infrastructure, with no electricity or running water in large sectors of the city. Most of the streets and avenues of the city are dirt roads.
Mbandaka was founded in 1883 by Henry Morton Stanley with the name of Équateurville. The city's town hall is about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of the Geographic Equator Line.
Mbandaka is one of the closest of any substantial city in the world. Stanley placed a large Equator Stone near the riverbank south of the city to mark the point where he believed the Equator to cross the river.
It still remains there today. Due to its symbolic location close to the equator and the Congo River, there were early plans to locate the capital of the Congo Free State in Mbandaka.
Although plans were made, they never came off the drawing board. These plans included infrastructure for an estimated population of 100,000 people, a train station, a Catholic cathedral, a governor's residence, and a palace for future visits of Leopold II.
In 1886, at the beginning of their colonial rule, the Belgians changed the city's name to Coquilhatville.
During the colonial time in 1938, work was started on a bridge over the Congo River connecting Mbandaka with the French Congo.
Work was abandoned at the outbreak of World War II and only the foundations of the bridge pillars remain.
In the 1930s several other projects were started by the Belgian colonial administration, including several factories and a new city hall.
The city hall was completed only after the war in 1947 and was at that time, with a height of 39 meters, the tallest building in the Belgian Congo.
On top of the city hall was a statue of Leopold II. The city hall was destroyed by a fire in 1963.
In 1966, the city's name was changed, this time by the new independent government, to Mbandaka to honor a prominent local leader.
Hundreds of people mainly Hutu refugees, women, and children in the city were massacred on May 13, 1997 near the end of the First Congo War.
The headquarters of the 4th Naval Region of the Navy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in Mbandaka.

A large research center for Central African history, originally set up by Fathers Gustaaf Hulstaert (1900–1990) and Honore Vinck, is at the Catholic Mission station of Bamanya or Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC)), 10 kilometres east of Mbandaka.
One of the finest botanical gardens representing central Africa is at nearby Eala, about 7 km east of the town centre.
The Botanic Garden of Eala founded in 1900 contains the floral richness of Central Africa with between 4,000 and 5,000 species.
It covers approximately 370 hectares with special collections (125 ha), forest (190 ha), marsh (50 ha) and savanna Euobe (7 ha).
The garden is neglected and unfenced and there is illegal logging. The last catalogue was published in 1924.
Mbandaka is the home of the world's first project of Habitat for Humanity International.
Habitat for Humanity's founder Millard Fuller served as missionary with the Disciples of Christ Church in Mbandaka from 1973-76.
The housing project Fuller started in Mbandaka in 1973 became the original project of Habitat for Humanity when Fuller founded Habitat upon his return to the United States.
The city is located at the center of the Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe area, designated a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention in 2008.
Mbandaka features a tropical rainforest climate. The city does feature wetter and drier months, with the driest month, January averaging around 80 mm of precipitation per year.
However the city does not have a dry season, all months average above 60 mm of precipitation in a year.
Temperatures are relatively constant throughout the course of the year, with average temperatures ranging from 23-26 degrees Celsius during the course of the year.
The Congo/Lulalaba River is the busiest route through the region. Rapids between Kisangani & Ubundu separate the river into two navigable sections: Kinshasa-Kisangani & Ubundu-Lubumbashi where it is called the Lululaba River.
Travel along the river is one of the great African journeys for the truly adventurous. Boats, ferries, & barges ply the river regularly.
However, there is no scheduled ferry service people pay to ride on passenger boats & cargo boats/barges with the boat leaving the port when full and does not necessarily stick to a tight schedule.
Boats become less frequent the further up the river you travel.
While boats from Kinshasa arrive in Mbandaka almost daily, boats only reach Kisangani every 1-2 weeks with the journey from Kinshasa taking 2-3 weeks.
Boats are even less frequent on the upper section of the river, although you may be able to find one from Lubumbashi to Kindu a couple times a month.
A short portage railroad connects Kisangani & Ubundu, allowing river travel from Kinshasa to Kindu.
There are also a few boats a month connecting Kinshasa or Brazzaville to Bangui, CAR, from where you can easily take a ferry or pirogue across to Zongo. Just be sure to have the right visas.
Small boats which are often dugout tree trunks called pirogues are the most common transport along the rivers of the Congo Basin.
However, finding one to take you where you want may be difficult and is very slow. Although some are motorized, fuel may be hard to find.
As of 2012, the only scheduled services in the region are: Compagnie Africain d'Aviation which serves Kisangani, Mbandaka, & Kindu; FlyCongo which serves Kisangani & Mbandaka; Lignes Aeriennes Congolaises to Kindu & Kisangani; Air Kasai to Bunia.
All of these offer domestic service from other major cities in the DRC. Some airlines will cancel a flight at the last minute because there are not enough passengers to make a profit and pay for fuel, etc.
Don't expect your trip to be on schedule a journey from Kinshasa to Kisangani may only take a couple hours, but plan a whole day for delays.
The only international service to the region has been Kenya Airlines from Nairobi-Kenyatta to Kisangani, which has started & stopped a few times.
Kinshasa is served by Air France & Brussels Airlines from Europe and several African airlines, from which you can transfer to boat or a domestic flight to reach the Congo Basin.
It is also possible to arrive in Brazzaville or Bangui both also served by Air France, Brussels Airlines, & a number of African airlines and then travel by boat to the Congo Basin.
Just be sure to have the right visas. Using the decent by DRC standards, National Route 4, you can transfer by road from Kigali, Rwanda.
It is also possible to fly into Entebbe, Uganda for visits to areas near the Ugandan border, although onward travel is very dangerous.
The only decent option to reach the Congo Basin by road is National Route 4 from Bukavu on the Rwandan border in South Kivu to Kisngani.
The road is sealed for much of its length, although travel may be slow due to people/animals on the road, overloaded trucks traveling slow, & checkpoints.
Safety is improved since the end of major fighting a decade ago, but is still a little iffy. Bunia can be reached by road from Uganda.
It is possible to travel from Cameroon or Congo-Brazzaville to Bangui, CAR on moderately okay roads, but traveling by road in the CAR is very difficult due to notoriously corrupt police/soldiers manning checkpoints along the highways.
From Bangui, vehicles can be taken by ferry across the river to Zongo.
Pretty much every other option to reach the Congo Basin by road is very difficult and consists of muddy dirt tracks that are impassible during and shortly after the rainy season.
The only train line entering the Congo Basin connects Kindu with Lubumbashi in the Katanga region. The line was rehabilitated in the late 2000s, although the rolling stock is second hand from Europe & India.
Stops at a number of towns along the line—some as long as a day—make the journey from Lubumbashi to Kindu a 4-8 day ordeal. Do not expect sleeper compartments, a dining car, or even comfortable seats.
You will most likely have a seat in an aging passenger car at best or have to stand or sit atop in an empty freight car at worst. Train schedules are erratic, and at times there may be 2-3 weeks between departures.
Contact the station master at any station to inquire about the next scheduled train, but expect delays. Pay only on the day of departure & bring plenty of snacks, food, & bottled water for the ride.
Waterways are the main form of transport in the region. A great number of pirogues, some motorized, ply these rivers and can be hired or you can pay to ride with others/cargo.
However, finding a pirogue going where you want to go is difficult and the journey can take weeks.
Aside from travel on the Congo or Ubangui Rivers and tourist rides around Kisangani, travel by pirogue as well as most travel in the region is best left for only the most adventurous and hardcore travelers with adequate preparation.
Solo travelers should never venture into the jungles alone.
There are no scheduled, commercial flights within the region except for, possibly, Mbandanka-Kisangani or Kisangani-Kindu.
Be careful, as some airlines run a multi-city route and you may have to make a few connections on return.
Kinshasa-Kisangani-Kindu-Lubumbashi-Kinshasa flown on one day a week. It may be easy to travel from Kisangani to Kindu, but to return to Kindu may require traveling to Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, or Goma and connecting to a different flight, perhaps with a layover for a couple days.
The UN has a large presence in the region and operates scheduled flights throughout the Congo Basin, but if you are not associated with a UN agency or another aid agency it may be difficult to hitch a ride but worth a try.
A large number of small planes travel the region and are worth trying to hitch a ride.
Almost all of the roads away from the cities are nothing more than muddy tracks.
Travel can take weeks, especially if your ride breaks down and may not be possible during and shortly after the rainy season. Many trucks will carry paying passengers. Be very careful in selecting your ride.
Nearly all are overloaded and passengers sit atop a pile of carefully loaded cargo. Falling off or the truck overturning are very real dangers.
Try to get a ride in the cab if at all possible, maybe offer a little more money than the driver asks and point to the cabin.
The trucks traveling around the Congo Basin are old and usually the driver and a helper or two have the knowledge to fix problems and navigate mudholes and makeshift log bridges.
Do not expect stops to relieve yourself simply do your business off the side of the moving truck. If your truck breaks down, a fix may take days or even a week or more.
Same goes for getting stuck in mud. Definitely an experience left only for the most hardcore travelers.
There are three lines in the Congo Basin. The line connecting Kindu with the Katanga region will make stops at some of the towns along the line.
The portage line bypassing the Congo's rapids runs from Kisangani to Ubundu and only travels when there is cargo to carry meaning it may be a couple week between runs.
A third line runs from Bumba eastward to Isiro. This is a narrow-gauge line damaged during the war and in a very degraded state.
It seems service has restarted on a small western section from Bumba-Aketi and possibly Buta and, while there were reports of trains running in the eastern section, the track eastwards of Aketi or Buta is most likely abandoned.
Boyoma Falls. On the edge of Kisangani, these are the last cataracts on the Congo until Kinshasa/Brazzaville.
Fishermen set up conical traps for fish and can be seen tending to these traps.
Some have realized that tourists want to see them and there are reports that they will charge Dollars to see them, stopping you before reaching the river and/or photographing them.
Congo boat rides. A trip by boat along the Congo is one of the world's greatest wild adventures.
Trips by pirogue for a few hours or a few days can be arranged in most cities along the river.
Only a couple tour operators in the country offer these rides, but if you speak good enough French or Swahili, you can probably talk a pirogue owner into a short trip, make sure you understand what you're doing & where you're going.

DR. CONGO: Ebola Spreads To Mbandaka, 25 Dead, Congo On High Alert
Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has spread from the countryside into Mbandaka, causing fears that the disease will be spread further and become increasingly difficult to control.
Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga confirmed a case in Mbandaka, a city of a million about 130km (80 miles) from where the first cases were confirmed.
The city is a major transportation hub with routes to the capital Kinshasa.
At least 44 people are thought to have been infected with ebola and 23 deaths are being investigated.
Ebola is a serious infectious illness that causes internal bleeding and often proves fatal.
It can spread rapidly through contact with small amounts of bodily fluid and its early flu-like symptoms are not always easy to suspect.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called an emergency meeting of experts to talk about the risk that Ebola might spread beyond DR Congo.
World Health Organization (WHO) holds a meeting today to decide whether to declare an international public health emergency which would trigger a larger global response, like in the case of the 2014-16 Western African Ebola outbreak and the 2016 Zika virus in Latin America.
The 2014-16 West Africa outbreak, which killed 11,300 people, was particularly deadly because it spread to the capital cities of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Senior WHO official Peter Salama said the spread to Mbandaka meant there was the potential for an explosive increase in cases.
This is a major development in the outbreak, Salama said.
We have urban Ebola, which is a very different animal from rural Ebola. The potential for an explosive increase in cases is now there.
Mr Salama, who is the WHO's deputy director-general for emergency preparedness and response, said Mbandaka's location on the Congo river, widely used for transportation, raised the chaances of Ebola spreading to surrounding countries.
Surrounding countries such as Congo-Brazzaville and the Central African Republic as well as downstream to Kinshasa, a city of 10 million people.
This puts a whole different lens on this outbreak and gives us increased urgency to move very quickly into Mbandaka to stop this new first sign of transmission, he said.
So far only three of the 44 cases have been confirmed as Ebola and involve people who are still alive, the WHO says.
There are a further 20 probable cases and 21 suspected cases.
The cases were recorded in three health zones of Congo's Equateur province.
Isolation and rudimentary Ebola case management facilities had been set up in Mbandaka to cope with cases, Mr Salama said.
The disease may have been brought there, he said, by two or three people who had attended the funeral of an Ebola victim in Bikoro to the south of Mbandaka before travelling to the city.
On Wednesday more than 4,000 doses of an experimental vaccine sent by the WHO arrived in Kinshasa with another batch expected soon.
These would be given as a priority to people in Mbandaka who had been in contact with those suspected of carrying the Ebola virus before people in any other affected area, in order to stop Ebola spreading in the urban region and beyond, Mr Salama said.
The vaccine from pharmaceutical firm Merck is unlicensed but was effective in limited trials during the West Africa Ebola Outbreak.
It needs to be stored at a temperature of between -60 and -80 C. Electricity supplies in Congo are unreliable.
Health workers had identified 430 people who may have had contact with the disease and were working to trace more than 4,000 contacts of Ebola patients, who had spread across north-west DR Congo, the WHO said.
Many of these people were in areas only reachable by motorbike, Mr Salama said.
Mbandaka is a poor city on the banks of the River Congo.
Those of its residents who can afford to pay for electricity only get it for three to four hours a day, otherwise people use generators or solar panels.
The city has two hospitals, which have received money for renovations.
But even they do not have a regular electricity supply and have to rely on generators.
For water, Mbandaka's residents use wells or the river.
Many people also use the river as a toilet, meaning there is a high risk of diseases, not just Ebola, spreading.
Passenger boats used to operate along the river to Kinshasa but these are no longer working.
However, traders still use wooden canoes to reach the capital to buy and sell their goods, and this is how it is feared Ebola could spread.
The WHO said it was not recommending any trade or travel restrictions either within DR Congo, for example between Mbandaka and Kinshasa, or internationally.
But Mr Salama said that 13 countries in the region were boosting border screening measures and said DR Congo itself was increasing exit screening measures.
The good news is that the DR Congo population is very used to Ebola outbreaks, Salama said.
They know to protect themselves by avoiding mass gatherings and mass funerals.
They know as well that traditional healers can amplify the outbreak.
Observers described the international response so far as remarkable and very rapid.
The logistic issues will also be considerable on the ground to identify who should be vaccinated and to get out in this vast and very difficult area and provide vaccination in an appropriate way.
There have been three outbreaks in DR Congo since the 2014-16 epidemic.
Ebola is thought to be spread over long distances by fruit bats and is often transmitted to humans via contaminated bushmeat.
It can also be introduced into the human population through close contact with the blood, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals.
These can include chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, antelope and porcupines.
The disease is endemic to the area and it is not possible to eradicate all the animals who might be a host for Ebola.
As long as humans come in contact with them, there is always a possibility that Ebola could breakup in any place.
Health officials have expressed concern about containment as the virus reaches a city of 1 million people. At the same time, WHO began shipping thousands of trial vaccines to Kinshasa.
The Democratic Republic of Congo warned late on Wednesday that the nation's Ebola outbreak had entered a new phase after a case was discovered in the northwestern city of Mbandaka.
It was the first registered urban case of the deadly virus, as the city has a population of some 1 million people.
We are entering a new phase of the Ebola outbreak that is now affecting three health zones, including an urban health zone, Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga said.
Kalenga added that the authorities were tracing all air, river, and road routes in and out of the city in order to trace the source of the virus.
At least 23 people have died in Congo's latest outbreak, which had originally been detected in only rural areas where it would have given health officials a better chance of containing the spread of Ebola.

Salama said that WHO officials are most worried about the spread of Ebola in Congo-Brazzaville and the Central African Republic, since they are both connected to the outbreak area through river systems.
He noted that the latest outbreak has occurred in a remote area near Bikoro.
But if the virus spreads to Mbandaka, the capital of DRC's Equateur province home to more than one million inhabitants, it could have devastating consequences, he added.
This is a highly complex, sophisticated operation in one of the most difficult terrains on earth, Salama said. "
If we see a town of that size infected with Ebola, then we are going to have a major urban outbreak.
A Nurse was the first to die in Congo's latest Ebola outbreak. The first death of a new Ebola outbreak was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo When the nurse died.
The World Health Organization said it was preparing for the worst case scenario.
Officials declared the outbreak in the country's northwest on Tuesday after lab tests confirmed the deadly virus in two cases from the town of Bikoro in the Equateur province.
The nurse died overnight at a hospital in nearby Ikoko Impenge, where four new suspected cases of Ebola have been reported, Health Minister Oly Ilunga said at a news conference.
Seven people with a hemorrhagic fever, including two confirmed cases of Ebola, lay in hospital late Thursday, he added.
The patients could have links to a police officer in Bikoro who died after exhibiting symptoms of hemorrhagic fever in December, National Institute of Biological and Bacterial Research director Jean Jacques Muyembe said.
The officer's mother and 10 others then showed similar symptoms. Muyembe said officials would likely contain the outbreak.
Seventeen people have died from hemorrhagic fever in recent weeks, Ilunga said, and doctors are treating three more nurses for the symptoms.
Officials must test nine patients for Ebola, just one virus responsible for such symptoms. Doctors have traveled to Bikoro to trace contacts, identify the epicenter and all affected villages, and provide resources.
The World Health Organization said on Friday it was preparing for the worst case scenario in the latest Ebola outbreak, including for the disease spreading to a major town.
WHO Deputy Director-General of Emergency Preparedness and Response Peter Salama told a regular UN briefing in Geneva that the health agency had alerted the nine neighboring countries but currently regarded the risk of regional spread as moderate.
Separately, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus tweeted that he and Congo's health minister had agreed that Ebola vaccines will be shipped as quickly as possible.
Counting the current one, Congo has experienced nine outbreaks since researchers identified Ebola there in 1976. The country approved the use of an experimental vaccine during a flare-up almost exactly a year ago.
Without preventive measures, the virus can also spread quickly via bodily fluids from person to person and even to animals such as bats and monkeys.
Ebola, which has no specific treatment, can prove fatal in up to 90 percent of cases.
None of the Ebola outbreaks in Congo have connections to the epidemic that began in 2013 and had left more than 11,000 people dead.
Almost all of them in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before it was declared over in 2016.
However, an outbreak did leave 49 people dead in the Central African country that year.
On Thursday, Nigeria's immigration service announced that it had increased screening tests at airports and other entry points as a precautionary measure.
Officials in Guinea and Gambia also said they had heightened screening measures along their borders to prevent the spread. Such efforts had helped to contain the virus during the West Africa epidemic.
Bushmeat is believed to be the origin of the current Ebola outbreak.

Could the practice of eating bushmeat, which is popular across Africa, be responsible for the current crisis?
The origin has been traced to a two-year-old child from the village of Gueckedou in south-eastern Guinea, an area where batmeat is frequently hunted and eaten.
The infant, dubbed Child Zero, died on 6 December 2013. The child's family stated they had hunted two species of bat which carry the Ebola virus.
Bushmeat or wild animal meat covers any animal that is killed for consumption including antelopes, chimpanzees, fruit bats and rats. It can even include porcupines and snakes.
In some remote areas it is a necessary source of food,in others it has become a delicacy.
In Africa's Congo Basin, people eat an estimated five million tonnes of bushmeat per year, according to the Centre of International Forestry Research.
Some of these animals can harbour deadly diseases. Bats carry a whole range of viruses and studies have shown that some species of fruit bats can harbour Ebola.
Via their droppings or fruit they have touched, bats can then in turn infect other non-human primates such as gorillas and chimpanzees.
For them, like us, this can be deadly. Bats on the other hand can escape from it unscathed. This makes them an ideal host for the virus.
Exactly how the virus spills over into humans is still not clear.
There's often an intermediate species involved, like primates such as chimpanzees, but evidence shows people can get the virus directly from bats.
But it is difficult for the virus to jump the species barrier from animals into humans, he adds. The virus first has to somehow gain access to the cells in which it can replicate by contact with infected blood.
Most people buy bushmeat from markets once it has already been cooked, so it is those hunting or preparing the raw meat that are at highest risk.
The current outbreak shows that, however difficult or rare it is, infection is clearly possible though it must be remembered that each further infection, from Child Zero to today, has been caused by contact with an infected person.
There has been talk of banning bushmeat, but that may simply drive it underground, experts have previously warned.
Hunting bushmeat is also a longstanding tradition.
It's a meat eating society, there's a feeling that if you do not have meat every day, you haven't properly eaten.
Although you can get other forms of meat, there's traditionally very little livestock production.
In Ghana, for example, currently unaffected by the outbreak, fruit bats are widely hunted.
To understand how people interact with this particular type of bushmeat, researchers surveyed nearly 600 Ghanaians about their practices relating to bats.
The study found that hunters used several different techniques to kill their prey including shooting, netting, scavenging and catapulting.
All hunters reported handling live bats, which often meant they came into contact with blood and in some instances were bitten and scratched.
These hunters are therefore the most at risk of contracting viruses present in bats, explains one of the authors, Dr Olivier Restif from the University of Cambridge.
The work also uncovered that the scale of the bat bushmeat trade in Ghana was much higher than previously thought, with more than 100,000 bats killed and sold every year.
People who eat bat bushmeat are rarely aware of any potential risk associated with consumption.
They tend to see it as healthy food. This survey was carried out before the current outbreak but the team says that understanding the perceived risks could help control future epidemics.

In many instances, contracting the diseases mentioned above often occurs due to the cutting of the meat, when animal blood and other fluids may touch the people cutting it, thereby infecting them.
Another path of infection is that some of the meat may not be completely cooked. This often occurs due to the type of cooking method: hanging the meat over an open fire.
Improper preparation of any infected animal may be fatal.
The consumption of bushmeat threatens a wide range of species, including species that are endangered and threatened with extinction. For example, a range of endangered species are hunted for bushmeat in Liberia.
Species hunted for food in Liberia include elephants, pygmy hippopotamus, chimpanzees, duikers, and other monkeys. Forest rangers in Liberia say that bushmeat poachers will kill any forest animal they encounter.
The great apes of Central and West Africa gorillas and chimpanzees are nearly ubiquitously sold as bushmeat throughout the region, and a study from 1995 suggests that the off take is unsustainable.
With the exception of a 1995 report from Cameroon, where gorillas were considered a target species for hunters, Central and West African hunters do not appear to target them.
Historically, poachers have favored hunting chimpanzees because they flee when one is shot.
Gorillas, however, only became easy targets when buckshot ammunition became available, allowing the hunters to more easily kill the dominant male silverback whose role it is to defend his troop.
Generally, great apes constitute a minor portion of the bushmeat trade. Although a 1996 study indicated that approximately 1.94% of animal carcasses sold and consumed in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo belonged to great apes.
It accounted for 2.23% of the biomass of the meat sold, which is significant for ape populations relative to their ecosystem.
Furthermore, these numbers may not have accurately represented the extent of the problem for the following reasons:
- Vendors may not have admitted the sale of great ape meat because it is illegal therefore giving wrong information.
- The carcasses are large, and may therefore have been consumed locally rather than been transported to large markets.
- Great ape hunting usually peaks when new forest areas are made accessible as they are unwary when unfamiliar with humans, but later hunting declines.
- It is nearly impossible to visually distinguish the meat source when it has been smoked.
Secondary effects, such as unintended deaths from traps, are not represented in market data.
During the time interval between a study from 1981 to 1983 and another study between 1998–2002 in Gabon, ape population density fell 56%, despite the country retaining nearly 80% of its original forest cover.
This decline was primarily associated with the transformation of the bushmeat trade from subsistence level to unregulated, commercial hunting, facilitated by transportation infrastructure intended for logging purposes.
Unsustainable hunting practices along with habitat loss makes the extinction of these endangered primates more likely.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga confirmed a case in Mbandaka, a city of a million about 130km (80 miles) from where the first cases were confirmed.
The city is a major transportation hub with routes to the capital Kinshasa.

Senior WHO official Peter Salama said the spread to Mbandaka meant there was the potential for an explosive increase in cases.
This is a major development in the outbreak, Salama said.
We have urban Ebola, which is a very different animal from rural Ebola. The potential for an explosive increase in cases is now there.
Mr Salama, who is the WHO's deputy director-general for emergency preparedness and response, said Mbandaka's location on the Congo river, widely used for transportation, raised the chaances of Ebola spreading to surrounding countries.
Surrounding countries such as Congo-Brazzaville and the Central African Republic as well as downstream to Kinshasa, a city of 10 million people.
This puts a whole different lens on this outbreak and gives us increased urgency to move very quickly into Mbandaka to stop this new first sign of transmission, he said.
So far only three of the 44 cases have been confirmed as Ebola and involve people who are still alive, the WHO says.
There are a further 20 probable cases and 21 suspected cases.
The cases were recorded in three health zones of Congo's Equateur province.
Isolation and rudimentary Ebola case management facilities had been set up in Mbandaka to cope with cases, Mr Salama said.
The disease may have been brought there, he said, by two or three people who had attended the funeral of an Ebola victim in Bikoro to the south of Mbandaka before travelling to the city.
On Wednesday more than 4,000 doses of an experimental vaccine sent by the WHO arrived in Kinshasa with another batch expected soon.
These would be given as a priority to people in Mbandaka who had been in contact with those suspected of carrying the Ebola virus before people in any other affected area, in order to stop Ebola spreading in the urban region and beyond, Mr Salama said.
The vaccine from pharmaceutical firm Merck is unlicensed but was effective in limited trials during the West Africa Ebola Outbreak.
It needs to be stored at a temperature of between -60 and -80 C. Electricity supplies in Congo are unreliable.
Health workers had identified 430 people who may have had contact with the disease and were working to trace more than 4,000 contacts of Ebola patients, who had spread across north-west DR Congo, the WHO said.
Many of these people were in areas only reachable by motorbike, Mr Salama said.
Mbandaka is a poor city on the banks of the River Congo.
Those of its residents who can afford to pay for electricity only get it for three to four hours a day, otherwise people use generators or solar panels.
The city has two hospitals, which have received money for renovations.
But even they do not have a regular electricity supply and have to rely on generators.
For water, Mbandaka's residents use wells or the river.
Many people also use the river as a toilet, meaning there is a high risk of diseases, not just Ebola, spreading.
Passenger boats used to operate along the river to Kinshasa but these are no longer working.
However, traders still use wooden canoes to reach the capital to buy and sell their goods, and this is how it is feared Ebola could spread.
The WHO said it was not recommending any trade or travel restrictions either within DR Congo, for example between Mbandaka and Kinshasa, or internationally.
But Mr Salama said that 13 countries in the region were boosting border screening measures and said DR Congo itself was increasing exit screening measures.
The good news is that the DR Congo population is very used to Ebola outbreaks, Salama said.
They know to protect themselves by avoiding mass gatherings and mass funerals.
They know as well that traditional healers can amplify the outbreak.
Observers described the international response so far as remarkable and very rapid.
The logistic issues will also be considerable on the ground to identify who should be vaccinated and to get out in this vast and very difficult area and provide vaccination in an appropriate way.

Seven people with a hemorrhagic fever, including two confirmed cases of Ebola, lay in hospital late Thursday, he added.
The patients could have links to a police officer in Bikoro who died after exhibiting symptoms of hemorrhagic fever in December, National Institute of Biological and Bacterial Research director Jean Jacques Muyembe said.
The officer's mother and 10 others then showed similar symptoms. Muyembe said officials would likely contain the outbreak.
Seventeen people have died from hemorrhagic fever in recent weeks, Ilunga said, and doctors are treating three more nurses for the symptoms.

Today the term bushmeat is commonly used for meat of terrestrial wild or feral mammals, killed for sustenance or commercial purposes throughout the humid tropics of the Americas, Asia, and Africa.
In West Africa, mostly Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria, Achatina achatina, a giant African snail, is also gathered, sold, eaten, and monitored as part of the bushmeat trade.
To reflect the global nature of hunting of wild animals, Resolution 2.64 of the IUCN General Assembly in Amman in October 2000 referred to wild meat rather than bushmeat.
A more worldwide term for terrestrial wild animals is game. The term bushmeat crisis is sometimes used to describe unsustainable hunting of often endangered wild mammals in West and Central Africa and the humid tropics, depending on interpretation.
African hunting predates recorded history; by the 21st century, it had become an international issue.
The volume of the bushmeat trade in West and Central Africa was estimated at 1-5 million tonnes per year at the turn of the century.
According to the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in 2014, approximately 5 million tonnes were still being consumed per year in the Congo Basin.
For the people of this region, bushmeat represents a primary source of animal protein in the diet, making it a significant commercial industry.
According to a 1994 study in Gabon, annual sales were estimated at US$50 million. The study found that bushmeat accounted for more than half of meat sold in local markets, with primates representing 20% of the total bushmeat.
Logging concessions operated by companies in African forests have been closely linked to the bushmeat trade.
Because they provide roads, trucks and other access to remote forests, they are the primary means for the transportation of hunters and meat between forests and urban centres.
Some, including the Congolaise Industrielle du Bois (CIB) in the Republic of Congo, have partnered with governments and international conservation organizations to regulate the bushmeat trade within the concessions where they operate.
Numerous solutions are needed; because each country has different circumstances, traditions and laws, no one solution will work in every location.
In the case of Liberia in West Africa, bushmeat is eaten widely and is considered a delicacy.
A 2004 public opinion survey found that bushmeat ranked second behind fish among residents of the capital Monrovia as a preferred source of protein.
Of households where bushmeat was served, 80% of residents said they cooked it once in a while, while 13% cooked it once a week and 7% cooked bushmeat daily.
The survey was conducted during the last civil war, and bushmeat consumption is now believed to be far higher.
The transmission of highly variable retrovirus chains causes zoonotic diseases. Outbreaks of the Ebola virus in the Congo Basin and in Gabon in the 1990s have been associated with the butchering of apes and consumption of their meat.
Bushmeat hunters in Central Africa infected with the human T-lymphotropic virus were closely exposed to wild primates.
Results of research on wild chimpanzees in Cameroon indicate that they are naturally infected with the simian foamy virus and constitute a reservoir of HIV-1, a precursor of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans.
There are several distinct strains of HIV, indicating that this cross species transfer has occurred several times.
Researchers have shown that HIV originated from a similar virus in primates called simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV); it is likely that HIV was initially transferred to humans after having come into contact with infected bushmeat.
The Ebola virus, for which the primary host is suspected to be fruit bats, has been linked to bushmeat.
Between the first recorded outbreak in 1976 and the largest in 2014, the virus has transferred from animals to humans only 30 times, despite large numbers of bats being killed and sold each year.
Bats drop partially eaten fruits and pulp, then land mammals such as gorillas and duikers feed on these fallen fruits.
This chain of events forms a possible indirect means of transmission from the natural host to animal populations.
Although primates and other species may be intermediates, evidence suggests people primarily contract the virus from bats.
Since most people buy smoked bushmeat, hunters and people preparing the food have the highest risk of infection.
Hunters usually shoot, net, scavenge or catapult their prey, and butcher the bats without gloves, getting bites or scratches and coming in contact with their blood.
In 2014, the suspected index case for the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is a two-year-old child in Gueckedou in south-eastern Guinea, who was the child of a family that hunted two species of fruit bat, Hypsignathus monstrosus and Epomops franqueti.
Some researchers suggested the case was caused by zoonotic transmission through the child playing with an insectivorous bat from a colony of Angolan free-tailed bats near the village.
Despite health organisations warning about risks of bushmeat, surveys pre-dating the 2014 outbreak indicate that people who eat bushmeat are usually unaware of the risks and view it as healthy food.
Because of bushmeat's role as a protein source in Western Africa, it is traditionally associated with good nutrition, and efforts to outlaw the sale and consumption of bushmeat have been impossible to enforce and have met with suspicion from rural communities.
In one study in Ghana, none of the bushmeat hunters knew about Ghana's hunting laws, suggesting that bans may not be enforceable.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that between 30 and 80 percent of protein intake in rural households in Central Africa comes from wild meat.
However, as human populations grow, the interactions between humans and wildlife will increase, making possible zoonotic transmission of diseases from animal hosts more likely.
One major Nigerian newspaper published a report about the widespread view that eating dog meat was a healthy alternative to bush meat.
Dog meat was implicated in a June 2015 Liberian outbreak of Ebola, where three villagers who had tested positive for the disease had shared a meal of dog meat.
One study conducted in Liberia during the recent Ebola crisis showed that socio-economic conditions impacted bushmeat consumption.
During the crisis, there was a decrease in bushmeat consumption and daily meal frequency. In addition, preferences for bushmeat species stayed the same.
Animals used as bushmeat may also carry other diseases such as smallpox, chicken pox, tuberculosis, measles, rubella, rabies, yellow fever and yaws.
African squirrels (Heliosciurus, Funisciurus) have been implicated as reservoirs of the monkeypox virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The bubonic plague bacteria can transfer to humans when handling or eating North American prairie dogs.
In many instances, contracting the diseases mentioned above often occurs due to the cutting of the meat, when animal blood and other fluids may touch the people cutting it, thereby infecting them.
Another path of infection is that some of the meat may not be completely cooked. This often occurs due to the type of cooking method: hanging the meat over an open fire.
Improper preparation of any infected animal may be fatal.
The consumption of bushmeat threatens a wide range of species, including species that are endangered and threatened with extinction. For example, a range of endangered species are hunted for bushmeat in Liberia.
Species hunted for food in Liberia include elephants, pygmy hippopotamus, chimpanzees, duikers, and other monkeys. Forest rangers in Liberia say that bushmeat poachers will kill any forest animal they encounter.
The great apes of Central and West Africa gorillas and chimpanzees are nearly ubiquitously sold as bushmeat throughout the region, and a study from 1995 suggests that the off take is unsustainable.
With the exception of a 1995 report from Cameroon, where gorillas were considered a target species for hunters, Central and West African hunters do not appear to target them.
Historically, poachers have favored hunting chimpanzees because they flee when one is shot.
Gorillas, however, only became easy targets when buckshot ammunition became available, allowing the hunters to more easily kill the dominant male silverback whose role it is to defend his troop.
Generally, great apes constitute a minor portion of the bushmeat trade. Although a 1996 study indicated that approximately 1.94% of animal carcasses sold and consumed in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo belonged to great apes.
It accounted for 2.23% of the biomass of the meat sold, which is significant for ape populations relative to their ecosystem.
Furthermore, these numbers may not have accurately represented the extent of the problem for the following reasons:
- Vendors may not have admitted the sale of great ape meat because it is illegal therefore giving wrong information.
- The carcasses are large, and may therefore have been consumed locally rather than been transported to large markets.
- Great ape hunting usually peaks when new forest areas are made accessible as they are unwary when unfamiliar with humans, but later hunting declines.
- It is nearly impossible to visually distinguish the meat source when it has been smoked.
Secondary effects, such as unintended deaths from traps, are not represented in market data.
During the time interval between a study from 1981 to 1983 and another study between 1998–2002 in Gabon, ape population density fell 56%, despite the country retaining nearly 80% of its original forest cover.
This decline was primarily associated with the transformation of the bushmeat trade from subsistence level to unregulated, commercial hunting, facilitated by transportation infrastructure intended for logging purposes.
Unsustainable hunting practices along with habitat loss makes the extinction of these endangered primates more likely.

DR CONGO: Discover Kisangani The City On The Island In The Democratic Republic Of Congo
Kisangani formerly Stanleyville is the third largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is the capital and largest city of the vast Orientale Province which is about the size of Spain, in the Congo Basin.
The city is found at the furthest navigable point on the Congo River upstream of Kinshasa/Brazzaville at the end of the Boyoma Falls, a series of cataracts along a 100 km stretch of the river.
The city's name comes from Swahili for "the city on the island" due to the number of tributaries in the area that almost completely separate Kisangani as an island.
Kisangani was a former port known as Stanleyville after its founder Henry Morton Stanley.
It traded palm oil and nuts throughout the Congo.
After the Congo gained it's independence and years later was ruled by President Mobutu Sese Seko he renamed he town Kisangani in order to Africanise his country.
Since then Kisangani has remained a major port for the tribes in the northern region in the country.
Being very near the equator and in the middle of the jungle, you might suspect the city has a wet, tropical climate and yes it does!
Humidity is high year-round, averaging 86%! Temperatures are fairly stable year-round, too, averaging 31/20 (88F/68F). The record low is just 16 (61 F).
Rains are heavy throughout much of the year, with a relatively dry season from December to early March.
Total rainfall for the year is 1620mm (63.78 inches) with the rainiest month being October (218mm/8.58in) while the driest is January (53mm/2.09in).
Kisangani is served by Bangoka International Airport. It has one international flight with Kenya Airways to Nairobi. Domestic flights to Goma and Kinshasa on CAA & FlyCongo along with service to Kindu on CAA.
As the end of the navigable stretch of the Congo River, Kisangani was formed largely to unload cargo and transfer it to train to bypass the cataracts.
There are irregular ferry services running between Kisangani and Kinshasa which take about 2-3 weeks. Most of these are old barges tied together and crowded with people riding atop cargo, although a few steamer vessels run this route too.
Overcrowded ferries are common and there have been a few instances of them capsizing, so choose carefully.
If you are lucky, you can negotiate with the captain for a private room or a bedroom.
Many of these ferries are supplied with food from people who bring boats from shore full of goods to trade or barter. A unique and classic trip, it's only for the hearty, experienced traveller, though still preferable to traveling overland.
Kisangani is difficult to reach by road. The only relatively "easy" route into the city is the newly rehabilitated National Route 4 which runs to Bukavu and the Rwandan border.
Much of the road is sealed, but slow-moving trucks and pedestrians & people on bikes keep the speed of vehicles down.
You should expect to encounter a handful of military or police checkpoints where you will likely be harassed for a bribe.
The route isn't terribly safe, with frequent reports of bandits setting up roadblocks and robbing motorists.
Additionally, safety in North/South Kivu is still shaky. You are best off traveling with a trucker or other local vehicle.
If traveling in your own vehicle especially a non-DRC vehicle, try to travel with a local or convoy for safety and to avoid excessive harassment at checkpoints.
Other roads in/out of the city are mostly muddy tracks only suitable for large 4x4 or 6x6 trucks. Travel from other major cities in the DRC can take weeks and isn't a very pleasant experience!
A train line runs south to Ubundu, mainly to haul freight traveling by boat around the cataracts. You should inquire at the train station for tickets and the next train as the trains run on erratic schedules.
Very few taxis and cars in general are available in Kisangani, but there's an easy and fun way to get around.
Stretch out an arm to any passing little motorbike and they'll take you to any place in the city. Normal price is around 1,5 USD. Same goes for natives on bicycles: they are an even cheaper alternative to motorbikes. Slower and less exciting though.
Boyoma Falls. On the edge of Kisangani, these are the last cataracts on the Congo until Kinshasa/Brazzaville.
Fishermen set up conical traps for fish and can be seen tending to these traps. Some have realized that tourists want to see them and there are reports that they will charge dollars to see them,stopping you before reaching the river and/or photographing them.
Congo boat rides. A trip by boat along the Congo is one of the world's greatest wild adventures. Trips by pirogue for a few hours or a few days can be arranged in most cities along the river.
Only a couple tour operators in the country offer these rides, but if you speak good enough French or Swahili, you can probably talk a pirogue owner into a short trip,make sure you understand what you're doing & where you're going.
Also you could head to the City Center and visit the bustling Central Market or even opposite Avenues de Atelier, you could have cheap but top quality lunch at La Bourgeoise.
Finally on Avenue Lumumba you could take photos of Lumumba stadium, it is not much but something to keep in memory.
Buy yourself a ride on the great Congo River. You'll really enjoy it. Also see if you can find any traditional souvenirs to remind of the journey.
Expect to eat what's eaten around most of the Congo; rice, maize and fish.
Drink the popular Congolese beer and european wines.

Fight Against Poaching Turning From Guns To Smart Phones
Poaching remains a serious existential threat for many species, in spite of global efforts to combat it. But an innovative app could help thwart poachers in remote areas and beyond.
The digital age might be a good thing for man, but the same doesn't ring true for beast. Mobile technology has enabled wildlife traffickers to decimate animal stock around the world by placing a simple phone call. And that is a massive problem.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Southeast Asia is ground zero for setting the pace toward an extinction crisis. The organization lists 150 land and water species native to the region as critically endangered. Some face being eaten out of existence; yet others are poised to be eradicated as a result of wildlife trafficking.
In Central Africa, studies estimate that systematic poaching has resulted in the loss of 100,000 forest elephants - a 64 percent decline over the past 10 years.
But rather than engage poachers in firefights bullet for bullet - which is dangerous, not to mention being a drain on resources - an international consortium of conservation organizations has embarked on a new high-tech strategy to combat such losses.
Hunting the illegal hunters
New York-based nonprofit organization Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), working with seven conservation groups, has developed software aimed at helping rangers in remote locations to anticipate poaching activity rather than merely reacting to it.
The SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) application, as it is known, provides users with information on illegal hunting, telling them what happened and where. Designed to work in tandem with GPS-enabled devices, such as heavy-duty cell phones, it also allows conservation managers to map and follow a ranger's activities.
"You can collect data on where rangers have been, while on patrol, but also make observations on what they've seen," SMART program coordinator Alexa Montefiore said. "What's key about SMART is that it also operates in offline environments. It streamlines collecting data to make it more efficient."
What results is that patrol data is no longer stored at isolated field stations, rather transferred to and stored on secure servers at headquarters. After rangers enter information into a handheld device, this is then fed into data visualization software. From there, patterns emerge that Montefiore says enable site managers to direct rangers and resources to critical areas.
This ability to gather field intelligence on animals and well-armed poachers could be a game-changer - especially for rangers and non-governmental organizations facing multiple threats in the Global South.
Conservation groups have already implemented SMART in 130 protected areas across 29 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and the technology is also slated to be adopted elsewhere.
Colombia, for example, intends to implement the free and open software throughout its vast network of 58 parks, Montefiore told DW.
Exploiting the mobile phone rise
Although not a cure-all for illegal activity, an observant ranger equipped with a handheld device capitalizes on two technological trends. Firstly, the system enables users to upload and share information over digital networks.
Secondly, it's cheaper. "Rugged" mobile devices, which range in price from around 120 euros to 500 euros, are far cheaper than the old equipment, which was bulky and expensive. These days, smart phones function much like laptops did 10 years ago.
Moreover, mobile phone use in Asia and Africa has skyrocketed. According to a Gallup Poll from 2013, nearly two-thirds of all households in sub-Saharan Africa own at least one cell phone.
Smart phones also play a major role in modern life in Southeast Asia. In Cambodia, for example, 58 percent of the urban population and 47 percent of the rural population own a mobile phone.
"In many of the places we're working, people already embrace technology," says Antony Lynam, program manager for the WCS Asia programs. "They're already using smart phones to text and communicate - SMART is another piece of technology that they can get into," Lynam explains. SMART is going to be rolled out at five or six pilot sites, he added.
App plus people power
Other research institutions and NGOs are testing similar approaches to conservation and the battle against poaching. For example, one crowd-funded conservation project hopes to put smart phones in the hands of the JulHoansi people, hunter- gatherers who serve as the guardians in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy in Namibia.
The site Crowdfunder describes how the JulHoansi intend to use smart phones to monitor the illegal encroachment of cattle onto their ancestral homelands.
Yet another app called Sapelli is a mapping tool, created to help indigenous people living in the Congo Basin to monitor and chart the illegal activities of poachers operating in their area.
But Lynam says the technology is only as effective as those using it. "Poachers can compromise rangers quickly, especially in regions with luxury timber and high value species to poach," he says. "Pretty soon, traders get to these rangers and start to corrupt them."
Lynam, who is a lifelong wildlife conservationist, says traffickers pay rangers large sums of money to turn a blind eye.
Technological risks
But there are also risks to embracing such technology. If a wildlife trafficker were to bribe or hack their way into a SMART database, that could have devastating consequences for conservation personnel and the species they try to protect.
But the battle is on. And with well-organized traffickers having what Lynam describes as the "best communications gear, vehicles and networks of people" to help shift illegal goods through international checkpoints, anti-poaching efforts need good weapons, too.
Lynman welcomes SMART and its ability to reveal the true state of protected areas to stakeholders - and to provide conservationists with the information required to take action.

Colombia, for example, intends to implement the free and open software throughout its vast network of 58 parks, Montefiore told DW.
Exploiting the mobile phone rise
Although not a cure-all for illegal activity, an observant ranger equipped with a handheld device capitalizes on two technological trends. Firstly, the system enables users to upload and share information over digital networks.
Secondly, it's cheaper. "Rugged" mobile devices, which range in price from around 120 euros to 500 euros, are far cheaper than the old equipment, which was bulky and expensive. These days, smart phones function much like laptops did 10 years ago.
Moreover, mobile phone use in Asia and Africa has skyrocketed. According to a Gallup Poll from 2013, nearly two-thirds of all households in sub-Saharan Africa own at least one cell phone.
Smart phones also play a major role in modern life in Southeast Asia. In Cambodia, for example, 58 percent of the urban population and 47 percent of the rural population own a mobile phone.
"In many of the places we're working, people already embrace technology," says Antony Lynam, program manager for the WCS Asia programs. "They're already using smart phones to text and communicate - SMART is another piece of technology that they can get into," Lynam explains. SMART is going to be rolled out at five or six pilot sites, he added.
App plus people power
Other research institutions and NGOs are testing similar approaches to conservation and the battle against poaching. For example, one crowd-funded conservation project hopes to put smart phones in the hands of the JulHoansi people, hunter- gatherers who serve as the guardians in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy in Namibia.
The site Crowdfunder describes how the JulHoansi intend to use smart phones to monitor the illegal encroachment of cattle onto their ancestral homelands.
Yet another app called Sapelli is a mapping tool, created to help indigenous people living in the Congo Basin to monitor and chart the illegal activities of poachers operating in their area.
But Lynam says the technology is only as effective as those using it. "Poachers can compromise rangers quickly, especially in regions with luxury timber and high value species to poach," he says. "Pretty soon, traders get to these rangers and start to corrupt them."
Lynam, who is a lifelong wildlife conservationist, says traffickers pay rangers large sums of money to turn a blind eye.
Technological risks
But there are also risks to embracing such technology. If a wildlife trafficker were to bribe or hack their way into a SMART database, that could have devastating consequences for conservation personnel and the species they try to protect.
But the battle is on. And with well-organized traffickers having what Lynam describes as the "best communications gear, vehicles and networks of people" to help shift illegal goods through international checkpoints, anti-poaching efforts need good weapons, too.
Lynman welcomes SMART and its ability to reveal the true state of protected areas to stakeholders - and to provide conservationists with the information required to take action.
