UGANDA: Largest Chicken Firm In East & Central Africa

HMH-Rainbow has become the region’s processor of chicken, thanks to a merger between Hudani Manji Holdings Ltd (HMHL)’s Yokuku and South Africa’s RCL Foods (RCL)’s Enkoko brands.

Hudani Manji Holdings Ltd, which launched Yokuku Uganda last year, said in a statement that the joint venture made “HMH-Rainbow the largest processor of chicken in both Uganda, east and central Africa,” also supplying fresh and frozen chicken.

The company said it had invested $10m (Shs 26bn) in Yokuku last year.

“RCL Foods will initially be taking a 33.5 per cent equity stake in HMH-Rainbow and will be injecting funds for further expansion of the business,” the statement said.

The company said it would expand the capacity of the broiler farms to reach 540,000 birds per cycle within the next 18 months. It would also expand the feed mill, which is likely to increase supplies from local out-growers of maize and soya beans, the statement added.

The new company will officially be commissioned at the HMH-Rainbow head offices in Kampala in the last quarter of this year – followed by a rollout of retail outlets.
