Frankfurt Airport unveiled its first Green Gate recently, offering greener aircraft ground servicing through the use of electric vehicles and the integration of new electrically driven developments in the servicing process.
“The use of electric vehicles in aircraft servicing and rolling and towing traffic can substantially reduce noise and emissions at airports,” said Norbert Barthle, parliamentary state secretary at Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. “This protects the environment and the staff on the ground.”
As part of the airport's existing government funded E-PORT AN projects for cleaner aviation, the initiative improves the environmental footprint and working conditions on the apron as up to 20 different vehicles are used to service an aircraft.
“The use of electric vehicles at the airport is an essential starting point for us to reduce CO2 emissions,” said Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, which operates Frankfurt Airport.
Ongoing electric mobility projects include solar-powered passenger airstairs, electric conveyor belt vehicles, hybrid aircraft tugs and electric pallet trucks.
