ZIMBABWE: Man Batters Girlfriend After She Foils His Suicide Bid And Saves His Life

A 36 year old Harare man will perform 105 hrs of community service for bashing his girlfriend after she cut the rope he had hanged himself with in a bid to commit suicide.

Enraged that he had been stopped from killing himself, Jaison Kautsa flogged girlfriend, Faith Ndlovu, 33, with a mop stick, iron rod and clenched fists, leaving her for the dead.

Kautsa appeared before magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta on Monday and pleaded guilty to the charges of assault. Chrispen Chikafu prosecuted.

In mitigation, instead of pleading for leniency, Kautsa told the court that he really wanted to kill himself and was angry that Ndlovu cut the rope.

“Why would she do such a thing after ditching me? Why did she cut the rope? She should have just left me to die,” he said.

Charges against Kautsa arose on the 26th of October when he visited Ndlovu’s place of residence in Harare’s Kambuzuma area.

Kautsa found his lover standing in the street talking to another man who went away upon his arrival.

This did not go down well with Kautsa and he started accusing his girlfriend of cheating on him.

He proceeded to Ndlovu’s house where he took a rope and hanged himself on a roof gutter.

Ndlovu rushed to rescue him resulting in the gutter falling down.

After this, Ndlovu untied the rope off his neck but as soon as she finished Kautsa started assaulting her.

Ndlovu then called for help and neighbours, Cadwell Makukutu and Lillian Mutimuri came to rescue her.

The “wild” Kautsi however, overpowered them all.

He picked up an iron rod which he used to further attack Ndlovu. He then fled from the scene in his vehicle.

The case was reported leading to his arrest.
