ZIMBABWE: Three Young Cousins Drown In Seke, Villagers Say River Haunted

Police have confirmed the death of three girls from the same family who drowned while swimming in a river on Sunday.

Mashonaland East provincial spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo said Bridget Takawira, 14, Natasha Charakupa, 9, and Beauty Banola, 9, all of Chamboko Village near Dema, drowned in Hunyani River.

According to the police, the three cousins had finished washing their clothes when they started swimming.

When another girl who was part of the group discovered that the other three girls had drowned she rushed home to inform the elders.

An uncle and a police officer who had been fishing nearby rushed to the scene.

Muzondo said the two managed to retrieve the bodies before making a report at Dema police station.

The three bodies were then ferried to Chitungwiza Hospital where post-mortems will be carried out.

The three girls were pupils at Marikopo primary school in the same area.

Villagers in the area suspect the river to be haunted, saying the girls could not have drowned as the water level is currently low.

Some villagers feel that traditional leaders including Chief Seke should perform a cleansing ceremony at the river.

One villager said when one of the girls was retrieved from the river she had unknown white stuff coming out of her mouth. The man claimed that a mermaid lived in the river.
