CANADA: Air Canada Turned Around After Encountering Flock Of Birds After Takeoff

A flock of birds meant a quick turnaround for an Air Canada jet in Saskatoon last week.

A flight headed to Toronto last Thursday afternoon noticed a large number of birds shortly after takeoff. The crew heard one of them hit the plane.

After that, the crew started smelling "an acrid odour" and noticed the temperature gauges on one of the engines went off.

The pilot declared a pan pan (one step down from a mayday emergency) and quickly turned around and landed the plane.

"Our pilots are highly skilled professionals who are trained to respond to any number of events which they may encounter," said Air Canada spokesperson Angela Mah.

Air Canada said all customers were rebooked on later flights, and the engine has been replaced. The Embraer 90 aircraft is now back in service.
