HOBART is gaining a reputation as a city of serious coffee, with connoisseurs of the beverage frothing with praise for the capital’s top cafes.

TripAdvisor has tallied tourists’ comments about Hobart’s coffee scene and created a Top 10 list of coffee shops.

The owner of the cafe ranked No.1 said tourists and locals were becoming more discerning about their coffee.

Pilgrim Coffee owner Will Priestley said knowledge about coffee seemed to be growing in line with the number of coffee shops in Hobart.

“Coffee knowledge and culture in Hobart is increasing,” said Mr Priestley, who will be sharing his expertise at a coffee roadshow coming to Hobart next week.

“There’s a lot more coffee shops than there used to be and the quality is increasing,” he said.

He said Pilgrim’s speciality coffee varieties were being bought for $100 or more a kilogram, and clients could taste the difference.

The owner of Raspberry fool, ranked third on the TripAdvisor list, said tourists were also enjoying the home-cooking on offer.

“We tap into that nostalgic bent people have for food,” owner and chef Gail Sellin said.

Hobart will welcome its first showcase for lovers of cafes and coffee when the Café Biz National Roadshow arrives on Wednesday, August 10.

Roadshow director Jeff Dutton said the event would be helpful for anyone considering joining the tide of cafe owners.

“The unfortunate reality is most cafes fail within their first year, but not if you put the right people together,” Mr Dutton said.
