CHINA: Passenger Assaults Attendant On Los Angeles Flight

A Chinese airline passenger is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a member of the cabin crew on a flight to Los Angeles, according to a newspaper report.

The man is accused of attacking and threatening a male flight attendant on a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou to the United States earlier this month.

The passenger, who was not named, hit and yelled at the attendant after claiming his seat had been taken.

He allegedly continued to harass the cabin crew member during the flight and was quoted as saying: “Los Angeles has a lot of cars. You’d better watch out for an accident.”

The plane’s captain alerted the authorities and ordered the crew to monitor the passenger during the rest of the flight.

After the plane landed in Los Angeles, police detained the man and interviewed crew members and other passengers.

The case has been transferred to the FBI for further investigation, according to the report.

The authorities in China are creating a database of unruly behaviour by Chinese travellers after a spate of incidents, feared to have harmed the country’s reputation overseas.

Overseas travel has boomed in recent years among increasingly affluent Chinese.
