Canadian plane manufacturer, Bombardier, has announced a firm purchase agreement for 30 CSeries CS300 planes with Latvian Low-Cost Carrier, airBaltic.
The purchase order features 30 firm and 30 options, totaling 60 CS300 jets, valued at $5.9 billion if all rights are exercised.
This significant reorder from our CS300 launch operator is a strong testimony to the aircraft’s exceptional in service performance, said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.
We are proud that the CS300 has helped airBaltic maintain its position as one of the world’s most punctual airlines, he added.
airBaltic now becomes the largest European CSeries customer and the second largest in the world. The carrier will now have over 50 aircraft on firm order.
Before airBaltic’s order was confirmed, Bombardier had 372 orders for both its CS100 and CS300 products, having delivered 29 units to airBaltic, Swiss, and Korean Air.
This order now takes the total order book for CSeries aircraft to over 400 units.
airBaltic’s new purchase agreement complements an existing order for 20 CS300 aircraft.
The first jets from this order new will be delivered by the fourth quarter of 2019.
The airline is in the midst of its Destination 2025 plan, which builds upon airBaltic’s current Horizon 2021, which has laid the groundwork for future expansion.
With demonstrated fuel savings of more than 22%, the CS300 aircraft plays a vital role in maintaining our operating cost at a low level, said Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer, airBaltic.
In 2017, we experienced outstanding growth and showed the world the unique capabilities and comfort of this innovative aircraft, he said.
According to the airline’s CEO, airBaltic has successfully executed its fleet modernization strategy, and are excited to further grow our fleet up to 80 CS300 aircraft while phasing out our other aircraft types in the next three years, he said.
The Latvian carrier currently operates a mixed fleet of six Boeing 737-300s, five 737-500s, eight Bombardier CSeries CS300s, and 12 Q400 Turboprops.
airBaltic expects to phase out all its aging 737s, replacing them with the brand-new CSeries jets that will be joining the fleet through the next five years.
Just recently, airBaltic celebrated carrying its one-millionth passenger on their Bombardier CS300 aircraft since it entered service on December 14, 2016.
At the time of the event, the airline has completed more than 9,069 flights and flown over 23,603 block hours.

Pilot Shortage In Airlines, What Will They Do?
After coping with terrorism, bankruptcies and consolidation, the largest airlines of the world are facing a new problem: a looming worldwide pilot shortage.
The recent boom in air travel has created an urgent demand for new aircraft and additional flights as well as new routes all over the world which, in turn, have served the reason for a massive expansion of low-cost airlines. However, such a dramatic growth seems to seriously challenge its key players because currently more and more unfilled vacancies within the aviation sector are springing up.
Era of the Major Recruitment Drive in Aviation
Together with growing economies, airlines’ fleet numbers are expanding as never before. This consequently leads to the lack of people able to operate these aeroplanes. Nevertheless, the huge numbers predicted by the most influential manufacturing giants, Boeing and Airbus, have come as a true revelation. The companies have forecast the demand for as many as 617 000 new pilots by 2035.
Qualified Pilots Lacking Competence to Fly
Unfortunately, the need to supplement airlines with pilots as quickly as possible has led to some concerns related to the pilots’ training process.
As a measure against an increasing shortage, some flight schools have decided to take shortcuts or issue licences to pilots who have not flown the required number of hours. Therefore, Canada is already on its path to educate pilots much faster as Canadian pilots are no longer obligated to fly an aircraft or helicopter in order to maintain a valid licence. It is enough to undergo flight simulator testing only. However, a high number of aviation inspectors consider the rules changed by Ottawa to be “reckless” as it might dilute pilot-training and put the flying public at risk.
Correspondingly, while some American flight schools move towards loosening the rules, the European Aviation Safety Agency is working with airlines on a pilot training course in order to enhance pilots’ qualification. According to airlines, the present system produces pilots with licences that make them legally qualified to fly, but half of them are not good enough to carry out their duties.
Consequently, making flight schools requirements less tight seems to be not the only way to educate a huge number of pilots within the shortest period of time.
New Approach to Make an Aviation Career More Appealing
Another way to recruit more pilots is to get rid of the image of aviation as a “boys club”. Depending on the data provided by the International Society of Woman Airlines Pilots, around 97 percent of all commercial pilots are male.
Therefore, the situation itself suggests gender bias to be pushed aside. That is why recently more and more airlines are considering the idea of hiring more female pilots in order to meet the demand.
EasyJet’s head of crew training, Capt Eddie Sproul, holds the same opinion and says that the industry can ease the situation by improving pilot retention and appealing to a wider base of applicants. He believes that one of the most effective approaches is to make an aviation career more appealing to woman.
For instance, the UK’s third largest airline, Thomson Airways is actively calling on female applicants for pilot roles. Although currently the airline employs nearly 900 pilots and just 3% are woman, this is something the airline is keen to change with its latest pilot recruitment drive.
Due to the fact that the contemporary world has achieved total gender equality, this aspect should not act as a key feature determining whether a person can become a pilot or not. Depending on the general requirements, in order to qualify for a licence to operate an aeroplane a person should read, write and speak English fluently, have thousands of hours of flight time, have no criminal record or history of alcohol abuse and be free of a long list of medical conditions including colour blindness and diabetes that requires medication.
Airlines Search for Pilots
As a result, various airlines seem to be actively adopting new strategies to meet the phenomenal growth and are beginning major recruitment campaigns.
Australian airline Qantas, the third oldest airline in the world, has started its external pilot recruitment preparing for the arrival of the Boeing 787-9 in October 2017. Qantas said it has already received more than 500 applications. Although the applications are coming mainly from Australian people, some applicants from New Zealand and Europe have put their hat in the ring, too.
The airline said that the group of new hires will commence their career in Qantas as second officers on the Airbus A330 fleet which fly domestically and to Asia as well as Honolulu.
Therefore, the airline plans to hire 170 new pilots over the next three years to support growth on the back of a firm order of eight Dreamliners that was confirmed August 2015.
In order to support the carrier’s growth, the Latvian airline airBaltic plans to recruit approximately 1000 professionals over the next five years as well.
A Denver-headquartered airline Frontier plans to increase the number of operating airplanes from 63 to 72 and, hence plans to launch three partnerships with smaller regional airlines to help recruit and then hire their pilots once they reach a certain level of experience.
After those pilots advance to becoming captains, build at least 1000 hours of pilot-in-command time, meet dependability metrics and receive letters of recommendations, they are guaranteed to transition to Frontier as a first officer.
The Scandinavian low-cost airline Norwegian has stated that it is recruiting and hiring American pilots for its crew base at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. According to the airline’s spokesman, the carrier aims to hire a minimum of 24 crew members that will include one base captain, nine captains, five relief captains and nine first officers.
The carrier wants to ensure adequate staffing for the dozens of new Boeing Dreamliner aircraft expected to join its fleet over the next few years. Additionally, it will cover the cost of converting the US pilots’ certification from a FAA pilot certificate to a European pilot licence based on the EASA regulations.
The airline has already received about 100 applications for the pilot’s job, which will offer competitive salaries.
Due to the fact that Europe’s airline No. 1 Ryanair plans to take delivery of 50 new aircraft in the next 12 months, it has announced that it is to launch a major recruitment drive.
In Ryanair’s Chief People Officer opinion, 2017 is expected to be the busiest recruitment year to date. The airline is going to hire 1000 new pilots.
urrently Austrian Airlines is looking for 100 young male and female pilots who will be recruited in 2017. The demand for new pilots is caused by the expansion of the fleet by two Airbus A320 and a long-haul Boeing 777 jet and the retraining drive trigerred by the integration of 17 Embraer jets to replace the previous 21 Fokker planes.
The national airline of the UAE has announced it will shortly launch a pilot recruitment drive across Europe in order to join both its Airbus and Boeing fleets. This is considered to be the first major push for new pilots in two years time. Therefore, the search will be focused on posts for First Officers.
Accordingly, many regions are facing an increasing demand for pilots and other personnel to operate an aircraft. The situation seems to be considerably confusing an ordinary workflow. However, training centres together with airlines are making huge efforts in order to prevent the further pilot shortage expansion.

RUSSIA: Rossiya Airlines
Rossiya Airlines JSC , sometimes branded as Rossiya - Russian Airlines is a Russian airline headquartered in Saint Petersburg with its hub at Pulkovo Airport. It is predominantly owned by Aeroflot and serves domestic and some European destinations and additionally operates the aircraft fleet for the Government of Russia.
The airline was established in 1992 and is wholly owned by the Russian government. In 2006 the Russian government merged Rossiya Airlines with Pulkovo Aviation Enterprise and on October 29 the new airline started flying under the name Rossiya. The merger process began in December 2004. In November 2006 it was announced that the merger had been completed and Rossiya Airlines was registered in Saint Petersburg on 9 October 2006 and has a branch in Moscow and 54 offices in Russia and abroad.
In February 2010, the Russian government announced that all regional airlines owned by the state through the holding company 'Rostechnologii' would be consolidated with the national carrier Aeroflot in order to increase the airlines' financial viability.[6] The airline has operated flights under Aeroflot's "SU" since 30 March 2014.
Arising from the merger with Pulkovo Airlines, the bulk of the scheduled service operation is from Russia's second-largest city, St Petersburg, where Pulkovo was the dominant airline, and Rossiya continues to be. Operations based in Moscow are predominantly non-scheduled ones for state organisations, or flights operated on behalf of Aeroflot; Rossiya continues Pulkovo's lead role on the Moscow-St Petersburg route.
Rossiya has codeshare agreements with the following airlines:
- Aeroflot (SkyTeam)
- Air Astana
- Air France (SkyTeam)

NORWAY: NorwayJails Latvian Drunkard airBaltic Co-pilot
A Latvian co-pilot who admitted drinking whisky and beer hours before an airBaltic flight from Norway to Crete was jailed for six months.
Two flight attendants were also given prison sentences of 45 and 60 days respectively.
The co-pilot, 38, was found to have a blood alcohol level of almost seven times the legal limit.
He told the court that he and his colleagues had downed two bottles of whisky before he began drinking beer.
"We lost control," the man told the court on Monday, explaining his blood alcohol reading of 1.35mg of ethanol per millilitre of blood, far over the 0.2mg limit.
The crew were tested by Norwegian police after an anonymous tip-off and the four accused were prevented from boarding the plane.
They had begun drinking at 15:00 on 7 August, the co-pilot told the court, and had agreed to stop at 20:00 but lost control of the amount they had drunk because they were tired after three consecutive flights.
He was still drinking beer shortly before 02:00 the next day, around four hours before his flight was due to leave with some 100 passengers on board.
He was initially sentenced to eight months in jail but that was reduced to six because he admitted the charges.
The plane's 50-year-old captain was also held in custody. He denies some of the charges against him.
Reports suggest his blood alcohol level was more than double the limit, at 0.54mg.
After the four crew members were arrested, airBaltic said it was introducing additional safety measures, including pre-duty breathalyser tests for all "safety-critical personnel".
The airline said all four had been suspended and it was seeking their dismissal.

LATVIA: airBaltic Flying Vilnius To Tallinn
airBaltic commenced services between Vilnius (VNO) and Tallinn (TLL) on 18 April. The 529-kilometre sector will be served by the carrier twice-daily on weekdays with no weekend service according to OAG Schedules Analyser data.
airBaltic will utilise its Q400 fleet on the route. Martin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic, commented on the launch by saying: “The opening of a Vilnius to Tallinn route is a symbolic new beginning for airBaltic, as it marks the successful conclusion of our restructuring programme.
Under the restructure, it was one of 14 profitable routes that we had to give up, and now we are relaunching it so that our Baltic customers benefit from convenient morning and evening departures, and considerably lower fares on the route.”
airBaltic will face direct competition on the route from Nordica which operates a 16 times weekly service between the two capital cities. For airBaltic this service becomes its third Baltic capital connection, with it already connecting both Vilnius and Tallinn with its Riga hub in Latvia.
Vilnius Airport celebrated the start of airBaltic’s flights to Tallinn on 18 April with cupcakes which were handed out to passengers by Arturas Stankevicius, Director of Vilnius Airport.
The Lithuanian facility also conducted a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony to cement the start of services. Conducting the ceremony is Stankevicius along with Inga Slapelyte, Junior Sales Manager for the airline.
Flights will be operated double-daily on weekdays using Q400s.

SERBIA: Air Serbia
Air Serbia stylized as AirSERBIA is the flag carrier and largest airline of Serbia. The airline was formerly known as Jat Airways until it was renamed in 2013. Air Serbia commenced operations under its new name on 26 October 2013.The airline has its hub at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
Air Serbia draws its heritage, including the airline code JU, from flag carriers of former Yugoslavia: Aeroput was established in Belgrade in 1927, and was replaced by Jugoslovenski Aerotransport (JAT) in 1948 as the national airline of the Socialist Yugoslavia. After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1990s, JAT became a flag carrier of Serbia and Montenegro (FR Yugoslavia) and was renamed Jat Airways in 2003. However, the aging fleet and lack of investments caused the company to record financial losses year after year, and several Serbian governments were looking after a strategic partner for the company.
On 1 August 2013, Jat Airways and Etihad Airways entered into an agreement of strategic partnership. Under the agreement, Etihad acquired a 49% stake in Jat Airways and management rights for a period of five years. The Republic of Serbia would retain the remaining 51% and hold five of nine monitoring committee seats in the company.Jat Airways was reorganized and renamed Air Serbia in October 2013 and launched its inaugural flight under its new name on 26 October 2013, from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi.
Air Serbia's logo is a stylized double-headed eagle inspired by the Serbian coat-of-arms. The airline's branding was based on work undertaken by Tamara Maksimović, a 25-year-old graphic designer from Novi Sad.
Serbian tennis player Novak Đoković gave his name to the first Airbus A319, and will be part of the series titled Living legends of Serbia which will appear on the new fleet of the airline. Serbian professional basketball player Vlade Divac gave his name to the first Airbus A320.
The first flight under the new Air Serbia brand operated for promotional purposes on 26 October 2013 initiating the service to Abu Dhabi, with the first revenue flight taking place the following day from Abu Dhabi to Belgrade. Since the launch Air Serbia has introduced services to Banja Luka and Prague on 1 December 2013, Ljubljana and Bucharest on 10 December 2013, Budapest, Sofia and Varna on 30 March 2014 with Warsaw and Beirut on 29 May 2014 and 1 June 2014 respectively.
Plans for Cairo and Kiev have been postponed until further notice. On 5 June 2014 the airline announced the opening of a line to Tirana in the near future. Following an agreement with Turkish authorities reached in Ankara on 16 June 2014, the airline will resume its flights from Istanbul Atatürk Airport on the European side of the city, replacing those from Sabiha Gökçen which it had been required to switch to.

On 22 October 2013, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić said that the possibility of Air Serbia transatlantic flights was discussed, claiming the first flight could be in three years time or earlier, to two destinations in North America, referring to Toronto and Chicago, or possibly New York City, which all would be operated with an Airbus A330-200. On 16 May 2014 Serbia and China signed a new ASA opening the way for future long-haul flights between the two countries.
On November 9, 2015, CEO Dane Kondić and the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić confirmed that Air Serbia will begin operating weekly flights to New York City in the summer of 2016. They will be operating with an Airbus A330-200, which will be likely leased from another Etihad partner. The Serbian Government is awaiting a decision on its application for these flights to be approved
Air Serbia switched operations from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to Sabiha Gökçen Airport on 27 October 2013, after being given unfavourable slot timings at Atatürk Airport. The move was seen as protectionism by the Turkish government of their national carrier Turkish Airlines. On 27 March 2014 the Turkish carriers flying to Belgrade, including Turkish Airlines, were issued only two months temporary permit by the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate, thus being at risk of having their rights revoked right in the middle of the summer season unless a compromise was found.
During the month of June the dispute intensified with highest level diplomatic representatives from both countries being involved and Turkish Airlines being under threat to be forced to reduce their flights to Belgrade from seventeen to four weekly.
Finally, following a series of meetings in Belgrade and Ankara, on June 16 an agreement has been reached that will see Air Serbia switching its operations from Sabiha Gokcen back to Atatürk Airport while Turkish will have to limit its number of flights from seventeen to fourteen weekly thus ending the row. Soon after Air Serbia officially announced the resumption of operations to Atatürk airport starting August the 1st 2014.
Renamed from SU-Port and shortened as ASGS, Air Serbia Ground Services was the first officially certified supplier of ground handling services in the Republic of Serbia, which has obtained a ground handling certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Directorate. ASGS has been certified to provide ground handling operations which include handling of passengers, baggage, aircraft, cargo and mail.
Since its foundation in 2002 and up to the present day, Air Serbia Ground Services annually provided ground handling services to more than 1 million passengers, on 8500 flights, on behalf of the national air carrier – Air Serbia and other companies.
On 28 May 2014 Air Serbia announced the creation of its technical division, providing services of line-maintenance at Belgrade Airport to Air Serbia and its partner airlines.
In May 2014 Air Serbia launched a new charter brand called Aviolet, which uses Air Serbia's Boeing 737-300 fleet under Air Serbia's JU code with a four digit flight number. Their first service operated on 24 May 2014 to Antalya.

CROATIA: Dubrovnik Airport Expecting 1.6m Passengers In 2015
airBaltic launched flights to Dubrovnik. Initially launched with a weekly service, the airport pair is now served twice-weekly, with the additional departure beginning on 18 June. In S15, airBaltic will be the 21st largest carrier at Dubrovnik, offering 274 seats per week to the Latvian capital.
Dubrovnik Airport is Croatia’s most southern airport, serving the south and coastal areas of the Dalmatia region. It has seen a rise in its tourism recently, helped especially with the city being the back drop to some of the scenes in the television series, Game of Thrones. The city is home to Croatia’s third largest airport, just behind Split and the capital, Zagreb. Looking at OAG Schedules Analyser data for the week commencing 10 August 2015, the airport will be connected to 50 destinations served by 32 airlines at its peak this summer. These destinations are spread across Europe, with the UK and Germany leading the way, as both countries each have 11 airports serving Dubrovnik. To see a further analysis of Croatia’s largest country markets, see anna.aero’s coverage of Croatia’s 2015 growth.
In 2014, Dubrovnik recorded its sixth consecutive year of growth, and in the past 10 years has seen only one year of declining passenger figures, which was in 2009. However the following year, the airport recorded its biggest yearly growth rate (in the last 10 years) of 11.8%, and ever since, passenger numbers have continued to rise steadily. So far in 2015, Dubrovnik has seen an average monthly increase of 3.9% per month, however the growth has been inconsistent, with February recording a decline of -4.9%, while March grew by an impressive 9.0%. With a capacity increase in seats for the week being analysed during S15 of 6.4%, anna.aero expects passenger numbers this year to reach record levels again, and potentially break the 1.6 million passenger barrier.
SVID says ‘Managerial and operational challenges’ for Dubrovnik
Entering Dubrovnik’s monthly passenger data for 2014 into anna.aero’s Seasonal Variation in Demand (SVID) calculator, the airport does not perform that well, generating a score of 88.7 ‒ a ‘Managerial and operational challenges’ rating. The airport ranks 39th out of the 41 airports analysed so far in 2015, lying between fellow ultra-seasonal airports of Ibiza and Menorca in Spain. The airport’s seasonality performance has declined marginally when compared to the result achieved in 2013, when it attained a score of 81.98, and also down from 2012, where it garnered a result of 79.86 ‒ which was still a ‘Managerial and operational challenges’ score. With this being said, 2014 was a still record breaking year in terms of passenger throughput, so although the SVID score has not improved, this may be something that the airport is prepared to face in order to increase traffic.
In order to gain a thorough understanding of Dubrovnik’s seasonality, anna.aero’s data elves also ran a comparison with two other airports in Croatia, Split (100.24 ‒ ‘Why bother opening in the off-peak?’) and Zagreb (6.46 – ‘Good’). From this, we can see that the two airports that lie on the Adriatic Coast (Dubrovnik and Split) show a strong pattern of seasonality, with the latter recording the highest SVID score by any airport so far this year. With both of these airports serving as strong transport hubs for incoming tourists wanting some summer sun, the SVID results are as expected. However, Zagreb is at the other end of the spectrum, having achieved a respectable score of 6.46 in comparison, due to its more year-round appeal as Croatia’s capital city.
32 airlines for S15, with only two serving this coming winter
While the schedules for the peak week in S15 show that 32 airlines will have operations at Dubrovnik, such is the ‘peakiness’ of the airport’s traffic, there will be just two carriers serving the airport in December 2015, unless of course a new carrier is announced or either British Airways and Croatia Airlines also decide to stop winter operations (highlighted in light green). These two carriers also form part of Dubrovnik’s top 12 airlines for the peak of this year’s summer season.
When comparing the August schedules for S15 to those experienced in the same week last year, the airport is anticipating a 6.4% increase in weekly seats. This year however sees the departure of Monarch Airlines and Aeroflot leaving the airport’s top 12 carriers ranking, with the former showing a 57% decrease in seats this summer, while the latter has now stopped operations altogether from Dubrovnik. As a result of this, we now see Thomson Airways and Finnair enter the airport’s top 12 airlines.
UK commands the show in terms of market demand
With 11 routes each, it’s understandable to see both the UK and Germany taking up the top two spots at Dubrovnik for country market demand. The former however has 44% more seats than the latter, meaning that frequency or aircraft density is greater on routes to the UK. The Croatian domestic market is significant, being placed in a respectable fourth spot. The only three destinations available for this coming winter are Zagreb, (Croatia Airlines), London Gatwick (British Airways) and Rome Fiumicino (Croatia Airlines). With 47 destinations being terminated at the end of S15, the extremely seasonality of Dubrovnik is obvious to see.
Gatwick, Zagreb, Barcelona, Rome Fiumicino and Helsinki make up the top five routes from Dubrovnik, with three of them also being the only destinations served this coming winter. What is surprising to note is that even though Germany has the second highest market demand, its first destination in the top 12, Frankfurt, only comes in at sixth place. Overall, the top 12 country markets make-up a substantial 89% of the overall seat capacity available this summer from Dubrovnik. A new addition to airport’s route portfolio this summer will be Milan Linate, with Alitalia scheduled to launch the route on 1 August with a twice-weekly frequency.
