After last week’s news concerning the launch of new hotels in Helsinki, the focus has shifted to Finland’s lake district with the American-owned holiday rental network Novasol expanding into the Finnish cottage markets. The news was reported by the YLE news site.

Novasol has 40 000 registered holiday rentals in 29 countries around Europe. The company is now seeking privately owned holiday homes for rental to tourists in Finland.

“We see demand for Finland across Europe. A few weeks ago I was talking with a Danish travel agent, who started in Finland two years ago. Finland is now their biggest destination,” Torbjörn Fredman, Novasol’s Nordic Product Manager told YLE.

In particular German tourists are interested in a cottage in the Finnish countryside; they are looking for a break from busy city-life and privacy on the shores of Lake Saimaa. Finland’s lake district is now experiencing increasing popularity in Central Europe. According to the company’s estimates, 60% of customers arriving in Finland are German.

“They have seen Greece and Spain and are now looking for something else,” Fredman says.
