MEXICO: Captured Gangster A High-Priority Target

Prado Rodríguez, also known as 'Ciclón 7.

Regional leader of Gulf Cartel was last of 15 priority objectives.

A key target of security forces in Tamaulipas was arrested without a shot being fired yesterday in the border city of Matamoros.

Angel Eduardo Prado Rodríguez, also known as “Ciclón 7,” was the last of 15 people who were high-priority targets of a state security strategy and a regional leader of the Gulf Cartel.

He also allegedly headed Los Ciclones, a cartel faction that has been battling for territorial control in Reynosa, another border city, against Los Metros.

National Security Commissioner Renato Sales told a press conference that Prado Rodríguez was captured by federal security forces in a house in Matamoros where US $20,000 in cash, rifles and drugs were also seized.

He is wanted on murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking and fuel theft charges, Sales said.

A show of military and police strength was seen in the city yesterday following a request by Mayor Leticia Salazar for greater security in case Prado Rodríguez’ arrest should lead to more violence.

There were also reports of gunfire between federal forces and crime gang members in various parts of the municipality. The worst of the gunfire was in the Buena Vista and San Francisco neighborhoods.
