GERMANY: Eurowings Connects Cologne Bonn With Cuba


Eurowings opened up a new route between Cologne Bonn and Varadero in Cuba on 2 November. Delegates at the inaugural ceremony included: Michael Garvens, Chairman of the Management Board, Cologne Bonn Airport; Athanasios Titonis, Managing Director, Cologne Bonn Airport; Karl Ulrich Garnadt, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and CEO of Lufthansa; Elfi Scho-Antwerpes, Mayor of Cologne; Ashok-Alexander Sridharan, Lord Mayor of Bonn; and Ulrich Stiller, Director of Marketing and Sales, Cologne Bonn Airport.

Eurowings commenced services between Cologne Bonn (CGN) and Varadero (VRA) in Cuba on 2 November.

The 7,942-kilomtre sector will be operated twice-weekly on Mondays and Fridays, and will face no direct competition.

The link between the German and Cuban airports will be served by the carrier’s A330-200s. Varadero is the first of six long-haul destinations to be served by the new Eurowings winter flight schedule.

Alongside Varadero, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic will be served, along with services to Phuket and Bangkok in Thailand, as well as Dubai in the UAE. Karl Ulrich Garnadt, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and CEO of Lufthansa, commented on the launch of long-haul flights from Cologne Bonn by saying: “Today is a great day for Eurowings.

We are enjoying the premiere of our first long-haul flights and are happy to present the first A330 with a new cabin and an extremely modern in-flight entertainment system to our customers.”
