The flight from Paris to Mumbai was tracked on radar flying through Europe and into western Asia before disappearing over central Iran.
It started to descend unexpectedly over Isfahan.
The pilot issued a '7700 squawk', which indicates a general emergency before it lost contact, it was reported.
The plane left Paris at 11:21am and was due to arrive in Mumbai at midnight.
Panic began on social media with the news of the planes disappearance.
One Twitter user wrote: "Just disappeared off the map, any updates?"
