South Africa’s heritage and culture tourist attractions are taking centre stage at this year’s South African Tourism Indaba hosted in Durban.
The Indaba is the largest travel and tourism trade show and marketing event on the African tourism calendar.
For the first time, the four day event will see cultural and heritage experiences dominate, as exhibitors showcase Southern Africa's best tourism products to more than 13-thousand delegates.
One of them is South Africa’s very first world heritage site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.
It's the natural beauty and rich biodiversity that earned iSimangaliso Wetland Park the honor of being South Africa's very first World Heritage Site.
Stacy Farrell, a boat tour guide of St. Lucia's offerings says, "The St Lucia estuary is just amazing. The water itself covers an area of 23-thousand hectares, the largest estuary in Africa, we have the over 800 hippos, more than a thousand five hundred crocodiles and with all the international people visiting we have 20 percent of Africa's bird population which is always exciting for the people to view."
The Park's natural attractions are evenly spread along KwaZulu-Natal’s North coast all the way to the Mozambique border.
But It's the Park's ecological treasures that make activities like horse riding with the backdrop of South Africa's highest forested sand dunes a must.
In reference to what they are expecting from this year's Tourism Indaba, Thandi Shabalala from iSimangaliso Wetland says, "Well I think marketing is never enough. We haven't done enough in terms of exposing what we have even to our local people, the South African here right at our door step."
Studies show 40% of tourists prefer heritage or cultural experiences.
