USA: United Airline To Serve Free Breakfast Snacks

How's this for a change: United is adding an in-flight service for free.

The airline is introducing complimentary snacks on all North American and Latin American routes beginning February 2016.

For morning travelers (departing on flights before 9:45 a.m. local time), the snack is a Stroopwafel, a caramel waffle. Later in the day, passengers will be offered an Asian-style snack mix or a zesty-ranch mix of pretzel sticks, corn sticks and ranch soy nuts.

The snacks will be for flights that don't already have any complimentary items.

The announcement breaks a trend among U.S. airlines of adding fees to services that used to be complimentary. Of course, that doesn't mean that the trend is reversing (haaaa ha), but it's nice to get something included with the price of an airfare.

United also serves Illy coffee on flights, joining the other airline industry trend to offer more upscale coffee options on board.

Snack offerings vary by airline, and some airlines still offer free mixed nuts or similar, though in general they have declined over the past decade.

United Airlines is bringing back free snacks for economy-class passengers in February.

Those snacks were cut off in 2008 by United and Continental followed suit in 2011 after the airlines merged.

Jimmy Samartzis, United's vice-president of food services, said the airline is "refocusing on the big and little things that we know matter to our customers."

Economy flyers can now look forward to treats ranging from stroopwafels, a Dutch treat of two thin waffles stuck together with caramel, to an Asian-inspired mix of rice crackers, sesame sticks and wasabi peas.

The airline said Wednesday that the snacks would return on all United and United Express flights within the U.S. and those in Latin America that don't already have them.
