A woman in southwest China was shocked to find a stranger showering in her hotel room, in the latest security scare to hit woman travellers.
The hotel guest, identified only by her surname Chen, was told that the stranger was a staff employee who used the shower unaware a guest had checked into the room.
Chen, who was on her holiday with friends, checked into a hot springs hotel in the municipality’s touristic Banan district last Wednesday afternoon.
After putting her luggage into her room, Chen, in her 50s, left to go swimming and have dinner with fellow travellers.
But when she went back to the room at around 7 pm, she heard the loud sound of running water from the bathroom.
“Who is there?”Chen said, deeply shocked and frightened. Shortly afterwards, a woman, of a a similar age as Chen, came outside with her wet hair, claiming that she was an employee of the hotel yet not aware of the fact that the room had been taken by a guest.
“Sorry, sorry,” the staff employee said as she backed out of the room. Infuriated, Chen lodged a complaint with the hotel and asked for her money back and to check out.
But the head of the hotel employees refused .
“Due to our limited resources, it was a normal practice for hotel staff to take showers in vacant guest rooms,” the representative was quoted as telling the guest. “The incident occurred because the information about Chen’s room had not been updated in the system.”
Chinese hotel regulations stipulate that no one is allowed to trespass into an occupied hotel room without the permission from the guest, said a legal expert.
