Spending the night on an airplane is typically an uncomfortable, sleepless ordeal, but not so for guests staying in the 727 Fuselage Home at the Hotel Costa Verde. Situated between Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park and the Pacific Ocean, the hotel features a two bedroom suite inside a refurbished Boeing 727 airplane from 1965.
Salvaged from Costa Rica’s San Jose Airport and meticulously restored, the plane is perched on a 50-foot pedestal, jutting out from the jungle canopy. Inside the 130-foot structure, find wood panelling, hand carved teak furniture from Indonesia, a kitchenette, and a bathroom inside the cockpit. Two private balconies rest on top of the wings, and feature views of the ocean and surrounding jungle with monkeys, sloths, toucans, and other wildlife.
Costa Verde’s director Allan Templeton was inspired to create the suite after he built El Avion, the hotel’s bar and restaurant inside a refurbished U.S. military airplane. The bar is crafted from the plane’s original wheel covers, and guests can drink, dine, and dance inside and under its wings.
The hotel also recently unveiled the Cockpit Cottage, made from the cockpit section of a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 passenger plane. The one bedroom suite consists of a king-sized bed and kitchenette, and has the same teak-lined walls and spectacular ocean and jungle views as the 727 Fuselage Home.
Other accommodations on site include guest rooms and bungalows, and the property has three cliff-side pools, on-site spa services, and adventure outings, from a motorised canopy bike that lets riders glide across the jungle sixty feet in the air to a classic zip line.
Rates for Hotel Costa Verde’s 727 Fuselage Home start at $260 in the off-season, and from $500 in the high season. After sleeping here, it may be difficult to spend the night on any other airplane.
